and we don't know that valve forced their hand. they've always maintained that's not their way of making games. maybe campo santo decided they'd rather be working on half life? who knows

real takeaway from the campo santo/valve news is people are excited they might be working on artifact.

Honestly it shouldn't matter whether you liked it or not. I selfishly prefer ten creative, if half-baked games, to the valve releases (or lack thereof). Not sure why people go to bat for valve ever tbh. Seems more akin to a broken clock being right twice a day than anything resembling a healthy company. Not to mention a private company with a store larger than however many country GDPs.

Edit: I am particularly biased in this case because I was/remain a huge idle thumbs stan.

the idea that the clearly creative, clearly good half life games are somehow a dead end next to ten what if half baked sentimental yuppified indie games is the problem there. no, corpirate valve doesnt get a free pass. and at this point i wish steam didnt exist for what its done to valve. id still rather rather play a good half life game than some fucking rareified firewatch clone. i mean we didbt even see ganeplay of valley. but im in way too bad a mood to be making this post. aand theres no reason they couldnt both exist

it is kind of wild that they don't really make games anymore and now that they're making a game to sell their tech that costs more than most of us spent on our pcs that people are willing to defend that

The “clearly creative, clearly good half life games” are just orange box and portal 2 at this point. You can’t just excise steam when it is the clearest influence on how they develop and release games, artifact being the best example.

Edit: I forgot left left for deaf but left for dead 2 and it’s reception/development doesn’t really bode well.

firewatch couldnt even make good on its supposed bonafides and campo santo had the money and freedom to do it at one time. thats more of a blank check than some other indie devs will ever get

it took me 8 years to spend as much on hardware as an index costs
it's bullshit to think consumers should just accept that gaming costs more than twice what it did before the supposed vr revolution which has prior to now felt like untesponsive dogshit

both portals suck, they're flash games translated to source with awful attempts at humour over the top

I mean releasing it as a separate sequel made no sense at the time and even less now. People are mad enough about overwatch 2 and that adds a new element with the pve content (them doing pve seasonal stuff muddies it a bit, but imagine an overwatch 2 with different characters and new maps, adding a few new types of attacks or modes or whatever).

I do think left for dead as a seasonal thing could be cool but knowing valve and their drives to monetize the only hope it has is as a dumb battle royale or something.

I loved both portals and both left 4 deads. I don't think my opinion on valve games really matters though.

portal was fantastic until it got meme'd to death. portal 2 still had strong puzzles but kinda self-indulgently huffed its own fumes. the left 4 dead games are incredible, and it's completely fucked we've never gotten a third one. I'd throw all of valve's vr dreams and every shred of half-life in the ocean to get l4d3.

I still think about playing as the zombies in l4d2 and pulling off that combo where one zombie w the long tongue holds someone near a cliff and I come in as the charger to knock them to hell.

At the level where you get off the boat to find gas in a city (New Orleans?) and the humes have to walk from the boat up a narrow landing into the city I managed to get a team kill using a charger. That has to be my favorite mp gaming moment

I'm no big fan of zombies either but yeah they could be replaced by any anonymous baddie really. It is by no means a scary game, just a blast of a coop experience.

RPS did 50 best pc games of the 10's, in no order

https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2019/12/06/the-best-games-of-the-decade-on-pc/

The list:

Dishonored 2 (2016)
Doom (2016) (2016)
Rimworld (2016)
Devil Daggers (2016)
Overwatch (2016)
Factorio (2016)
Divinity Original Sin 2 (2017)
What Remains Of Edith Finch (2017)
Slay The Spire (2017)
The Norwood Suite (2017)
Return of the Obra Dinn (2018)
Yakuza 0 (2018)
Star Traders: Frontiers (2018)
Hitman 2 (2018)
Into The Breach (2018)
Football Manager (2018)
Dark Souls Remastered (2018)
Eliza (2019)
Outer Wilds (2019)
Apex Legends (2019)
Ape Out (2019)

I played only seven out of those. They are

Hotline miami: Would go in my top 50 of this decade if i had played 50 games in this decade which i doubt i have considering i spent 4 years of the past ten playing exclusively two mmorpgs (not at the same time)

MSGV: Don't need to go back on it, a decent game that was gone from my mind the second i finished it (which i never really did but once that huge robot thing was dead i was like, i dont' care, that's the end for me)

Star Traders: Cool enough game but a gap filler you play in between more substantial games really. Don't know what it's doing in this top 50.

GTA V: Well i reached GTA fatigue with IV though this was an improvement but i don't know..the basic GTA gameplay isn't doing it much for me anymore despite San Andreas being in my favroite games of all time, had trouble finishing the game. had a lot of fun for a week but then it started getting a bit tedious. Factually would probably have to be in a top 20 or whatever but i'm not huge on it.

The Witcher III: Also detailed my issues with this game, it being very story driven and a RPG game that forces you to play one character with a specific class and with a very specific story that's already written (i mean you start the game and there's characters that you've supposedly known for decades and that you're expected to care about) Not my type of RPG so i quit after maybe 12 hours. When i have to actually force myself to launch a game, no use lying to myself. Like i'm sure what it does is cool but it doesn't appeal to me. Despite an amazing looking open world i was looking forward to exploring.

Crusader Kings 2: In the running for number one best PC game of the past decade for sure, does what i want in a game, that is allowing you to write yoru own story even if you have to fill in a lot of the blanks and the same goes for....

Rimworld: Also in the running for best PC game of the 10's, but right now i'm only mentioning the 7 i played in RPS's list so i'D have to sit down and write a list of my fav games of the decade and see what ranks where.

Also, haven't played Hitman 2 but i played the "first" and this is definitely in the best pc games of the past decade. Kinda weird they've not put RDR2 but maybe because it's yet to be completely fixed on PC, also i suppose it'S way too fresh to include in the list, you need a tiny bit of perspective probably.
