Registrations of new Model S sedans in the second quarter plummeted 54% to 1,205 in California, according to the Dominion Cross-Sell report, which compiles data from state motor-vehicle records. The Golden State is a strong indicator of demand as Tesla’s largest U.S. market, representing 40% of Model S registrations in the country last year, according to auto-sales tracker Edmunds.com Inc.

The new data from research firm Dominion Enterprises indicates the stylish sedan that arguably changed car buyers’ view of electric cars is losing its luster. Tesla is increasingly dependent on sales of the smaller Model 3, which starts at about $35,000, less than half the price of the most basic Model S.

Registrations of Tesla’s expensive Model X sport-utility vehicle also fell by about 40% in California during the quarter. Model 3 registrations, by contrast, nearly doubled in the state to 16,372. Registrations, which tend to lag sales by weeks, provide insight into where deliveries take place.

Mr. Musk is betting the Model 3 will transform the company from a niche luxury car maker to one that sells affordable electric vehicles. He envisions selling millions of vehicles a year, an ambitious jump from selling just tens of thousands of vehicles two years ago.

so to accomplish this they would have to both increase production well beyond the goals they struggled dramatically to hit last year, plus lower prices, all while continuing to run dangerously low cash on hand. i expect they keep chugging along for a few more years but tesla is almost certainly fucked.

they're targeting 360k global deliveries for the whole company this year - the jeep compass, the 25th most popular car in the country, sold half that amount in the US alone last year. if they're looking to compete with the big names they have to scale up many times from where they are now, and it has to appeal to people far outside of california. i'm not sure that's possible for tesla.

The most amazing thing is you can own one and drive it around just like a regular car and you don’t even have to tow anything if you don’t want.

It really - youre in a rural area and a carpenter. Your jobs range from 30-60 minutes away. Youre already losing that time, but to also lose an hour, hour and a half if wages on gas?

https://jalopnik.com/elon-musks-las-vegas-tunnel-kind-of-sucks-1836890921

So, we’re supposed to believe Teslas will be capable of full-self driving in all conditions by next year even though, by the following year, a safety driver will be needed for a .8-mile tunnel with a dedicated right-of-way, the single simplest application of self-driving that could possibly exist.

Not only does this lend serious doubts to the Tesla robotaxi promise, but it is also a definitive step backwards from better, existing technology.

Airport people movers, close relatives to whatever the hell The Boring Company is building in Las Vegas, have been driverless for decades. Just last month, for example, I had a lovely, quick journey on Denver International Airport’s driverless people mover, which opened in 1995.
