there aren't a lot of artists who i'll 100% cry over when they die but phish and "Weird" Al Yankovic are #s 1-5 on that list

In an interview on VH1's Behind the Music, Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh stated in reaction to the song that: "I was in shock. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever heard. He sort of re-sculpted that song into something else and... I hate him for it, basically."

It’s sad that there’s never been a crossover

Oh my god I haven't heard this song since I was 12, intense Columbia House cassette club nostalgia from the first few seconds alone. I loved his original songs.

I know there are older people in the dead thread.

Going by past conversations, I think I'm not much younger than you. I was in high school from '93 to '97 and was certainly aware of Phish at the time, but they just weren't my thing.

I don't know your age Jewels but my particular manifestation of the universal consciousness was placed in my physical form in 78.

Listened to this show this morning and that "David Bowie" was definitely the highlight.

I liked the show in general, but it was...strange. A bunch of songs they would play throughout the decades that followed, but in a different context that I am accustomed to.

was it about how good Trey doing If I Could on Live From Here was but that he still fucked up the bridge in Theme?

I keep forgetting to listen to the podcast, so I'm way behind (my brother got married last weekend, I've been seeing someone, playing lots of music, life's been cray)

One thing was definitely Live From Here... the Theme bridge was funny, but the fact that he DID the If I Could outro but didn't do it like the classic one is MADDENING... Anyway, still brilliant stuff, can't wait to listen to the rest

His tone is so brilliant in that... Is the 'doc just going straight into that Fender amp? He's using a snark tuner which suggests he's not running into much of a rig, since he usually uses it as a part of his rack.. Anyway, you can hear the pop of the strings resonating through the hollowbody, it's such a unique and fantastic tone for him... AH!

Yeah the podcast has some great stuff for sure. Feels like they’re not getting as much out of the source material as they could but after those 2 terrible episodes it’s been way better.

Also I love that 80s show, was the show that made me get it for sure. I understand why no one wants to jam out to 80s Phish these days but the tape quality on a lot of those shows is pure magic

I listen to 80's Phish more than 90-92 for the most part.. the former is weirder and jammier, the latter just makes me want to listen to 93 - spring 94..

Page gets the baby grand in Feb 93, and that's a HUGE boost... the kind of lower-fi vibe fits with Page's clunky piano-keyboard sound in the earlier days, but by 92 it stands out like a sore thumb

I made a very last-minute decision to go to Live From Here! Found a ticket for cheap up in the balcony. It was just a delightful experience.

Completely agree about 90-92 v 80s stuff. 92 has some highlights for me but I’d much rather take an 80s show over that period

I was recently going through .net jam charts and found a ton of long jams from 89-92 that I had never heard before.. mostly either David Bowie or Whipping Post, but I should go through and listen, I don't even have much of an expectation for what they'll sound like in that era since there's so little type 2 for a few years there

3/6/92 and 3/13/92 were huge early shows for me, I should give those a spin soon too

there are a handful of songs that i think are done really really well in 90-92 (basically the Rift and Lawn Boy material plus Divided SKy) that i love turning to to hear fiery trey. plus there were a couple 92 shows i listened to a lot in my early phish day so i think of that sound as quintessentially them and listen to it more frequently than any year pre 94.

The 4/18/92 Hood with the peanuts theme jam is absolutely gorgeous, and that show with Santana shredding on Llama and YEM rules.

Y’all, what’s the 80s show where Mike dosed and got it while they were jamming and realized he wanted to do Phish forever? Not an easy thing to google lol

This show with a FANTASTIC 27+ minute Whipping Post jam from Goddard 85 is likely the one, I believe...
