Cincy 03 was the night the fire alarm went off in their hotel at like 5 am when Trey was still partying and had to go hang out outside right

assuming they play Halloween this year....

In on way it lines up better for me than ever, like in the middle of the fall if I'm ever going to be able to fly all the way across the country for this it is a huge help to have 10/31 on a Saturday. On the other hand I can't help but feel like I should be like, hoping and planning to be out canvassing for Bernie somewhere that weekend. Or otherwise engaged in activities promoting the continued existence if our society

Just come canvas for Bernie/Other Democratic Nominee in Vegas in October?

And enjoy the Gorge! It's an incredible physical place in a way that photos don't convey. (And don't eat the plants along the walk back to the campsite, they're gross no matter what drugs you're on.)

Please be kind. I know the subject hopefully makes that go unsaid, but blah blah blah. I'm not even certain of my purpose here, but that's a larger issue.

I am a poser who within the last year has just gotten into these guys, and admittedly only started because of Harris and Analyze Phish. The only albums I've really tried are Billy Breathes and Fuego but I like the majority of both quite a bit. I'd never watched a video but for some reason I had clips of the NYE2019 show rec'd on YouTube and I was just so *happy* watching the overall production of the lights and dancers and just everything. Other than that I've been searching out some Harry Hoods as it is consistently my favorite jam, but the quality of clips and production itself seems largely uneven over time, not surprisingly. I think I came into this thread originally to ask for guidance on more hand-holding (that Harris in theory could poorly give  ) or starter kit-level material I should look into but maybe I'm already there?

Among the things you already like about Phish, there exists A LOT of it. So you’ve already received the starter kit, which is digging through what you like and having that branch off into endlessly long alleyways to bask in more things you like. And on and on. In that process you could pay a little focus on how different they sound from year to year which will reveal some of the backstory of where they were in time or why they were.

For resources this thread is a good one. Everyone’s got good stories and show or listening experiences to share here. But more practically the entire show catalog exists (in audience captured format) on phish.in or phishtracks.com. Or on something like the relisten app for mobile. That’s something I marvel at for new fans. It would have taken a lot of postage stamps for me to satisfy how much Phish I wanted when I first got started.

Welcome! Phish fans generally love answering questions about Phish and suggesting things for new fans to listen to. I loved Analyze Phish, and it's wonderful that Harris actually got someone into Phish through it. I think you're doing fine getting into them but in case you could use some suggestions:

You've probably listened to the "very unusual Harry Hood jam" from the Hollywood Bowl 2013, but if you haven't I'd suggest that, 7/1/14, and Worcester 12/28/10 for engaging 3.0 versions that go to new places for the song. Also A Live One has a beautiful Hood and solid versions of a bunch of their 90s staples.

Also you might check out versions of Reba, The Curtain With (the With part is important), Stash, Bowie, and Divided Sky. They all have a similar "knotty proggy composition followed by a jam" structure to Hood (as opposed to like Guyute, which is all gnarly composition, or Piper, which is almost all jam). This page is useful for looking up notable versions, but it's certainly not exhaustive and trust your own ears above all:

Yeah fans were shocked by the revelation that their name stands for Men Own Everyone instead of Monkeys On Ecstasy.

Heyyy ratthew welcome to the club

Along with everyone else’s recs you might wanna check out the song Slave to the Traffic Light which is similarly a blissy slow build type tune from the early days

If you are on Spotify, they have a collection of many of the band’s official live releases from across eras and it might be a good place to start. The officially released 8/14/93, 12/14/95, 11/17/97, 7/29/98, 2/28/03, shows and the 2017 “Baker’s Dozen” set are a good baseline for easily accessible classic material covering a good chunk of their career, all in soundboard quality, that you can access on there. Otherwise yeah, ReListen is a good app but can be mixed in terms of sound.

Also they are playing 4 shows this weekend that they are streaming live and that I’ll be streaming for board Phish friends. If you wanna see some contemporary Phish, join in (details in members once I bump the thread)

if you were a big fan of the New Year's Eve dancers you may want to check out previous years' NYE gags on YouTube too. 2018 Mercury>Santos and 2015 No Men hourglass are good. 2016 Petrichor if you want more dancers

I'll second Althea's rec of the jam charts.

After twenty years (good lord) of listening to this band, I've been going through them over the last few months and finding all sorts of gems I'd either forgotten or never heard before.
