i guess Queens is the first single from Kevin's album. reminds me of Cymbals Eat Guitars, a band that i believe Charles produced.

easily as good as anything on meadowlands
I look at bluegrass music as this sort of glowing ball. The point is to relax the technique around the glowing ball of feeling.

Just astounding

i know secaucus and silver have been repressed recently, but charles has said that the band doesn't see any money from those.

surprised there hasn't been a meadowlands repress since i assume they were on a less draconian contract for that album, but i guess nothing is easy with this band

I assumed they were waiting to repress along with the new record, but maybe it is limited due to absolutely kosher folding.

i've always wondered what's up with records from AK that are in limbo, namely this and the mountain goats' coroners gambit. john has said he's not very interested in spending time rehashing old stuff (tho AHWT got the treatment...), but that is probably my #1 stupid expensive discogs thing I want.

xiu xiu had no issues/have repressed everything elsewhere. must have had a better deal (or simply cared more to keep it in print)

I listened to The Meadowlands for the first time in years today. Lots to like about it. But not that song. It really does sound remarkably like a more meandering “6th Avenue Heartache” with fewer hooks.

I dig the Aeon Station song. I think I prefer that guy’s songs on The Meadowlands, anyway?

meadowlands is half inspired and half facile. not sure how cleanly that division is split between the two main dudes but i would not be surprised if this new thing ends up being better without that weight tied to its ankle

i also can't stop imagining the squabbles that led to this. like the rest of the band is like "hey charles, we've got a free weekend from our families and careers, let's finish the album already" and charles is like "i need 50% of the publishing because i've been updating the website"

that's not surprising, they're two pretty different guys. sonically they tend to end up in similar places (at least to this point), but songwriting wise charles is the more understated, his emotional hits are pretty understated or earned crescendos (like she sends kisses or ex-girl collection v. happy or hopeless)

"she sends kisses" still feels like an exhausting epic now tho, it's a helluva song. and people were comparing it to the wallflowers back in 2003, lol.

total conjecture of course, but in my mind, he was asking for a lot. kevin's comment seemed to make it clear that he did deserve more than an equal split but it was too much.

maybe he just wanted full credits for his songs though. who knows.

Yeah, I don't know what "dated" means here other than a style of guitar rock that currently isn't fashionable or whatever

Sounding frozen in the 2000s but still good is the entire point of this band

That said I am looking forward to Charles' nightcore bitcrushed megamix

I mean, a lot of those songs were kicking around in some form by 1999, so…yeah. Kevin’s really good at what he does, but I have a soft spot for his moody piano tracks:
