Just poppin' in to say Cass kicks ass.
And I feel like this year is really about, just the year of realizing stuff.

reminder that this happened

Buzz Fledderjohn wrote:saw cass last night @ union pool in nyc, said he and his band just finished recording an album two days ago and they played ~10 songs from it at the show, plus "big wheel", "medusa's outhouse" and "the burning of the temple, 2012"

new songs sounded great, pretty rockin + a lot of pedal steel. a couple had severe grateful dead vibes which rules. one sounded like AC/DC but proggier. one mellow one that just repeated "i'm tying up loose ends" was great.

not sure if something has changed or it's just been a long mixing/mastering process

Skiffle Players record had no staying power for me. i remember it came out around the same time as TLoP.
saw it in a used record bin recently but had forgotten it existed prior to that.

imo Cass would be smart to scale down and make a more stripped record again after the weird wonky maximalism of some of fhe stuff on ML.

i want another set of songs produced like Catacombs. that is, if the set of songs is well-written enough to stand on its own like that record does with minimal/non-intrusive production. i definitely feel in retrospect that some tracks on ML leaned on production flourishes to compensate for being underwritten.

I listen through my 'best of Cass' playlist at least once a week at work. (bill's just as much, too!) but yooooo that is some crazy talk about Mangy Love! lyrically, I think it's some of his most exploratory, image-provoking work. i think about lines like 'goin louisiana justa hang myself' 'if it's so easy - YOU TRY it!, here, if its SO EASY, u try it' and chinese alley and medusa's outhouse, just, the whole abstract concept in general, quite a bit. Is it the lyrics of Rancid Girl you find offensive and off-putting? i think it's pretty damn funny and playful and pretty on the mark and totally relatable in a sad-but-true way. absolutely known, and definitely dated some rancid girls in my day and hear/visualize/nostaliga-trip on it being a punk chick that wears Rancid shirts. Even the fake-fuck-up intro reminds me of their album 'Let's Go' for some reason(i can't even remember if they do a fake-out or lo-fi/outtake intro on it).. when it came out, someone made the point that i't's basically like one of those half-sarcastic blown out John Lennon tunes in its spirit and i though that was pretty on point. maybe Cass even does that better? I think so.

to me, it's amazing how he can take something so basic and benign and very something-i-never-would-think-to-write-a-song-about like 'Robin Egg Blue' and just make it so deep and memorable and just succinctly perfect

ranking would be tough for me. i feel like "best" Cass album for me is always changing. some days it can definitely be WE or Catacombs or DtW. other days i'm rly feelin the sprawl of something like BW&O.

Mangy Love has aged well. i'll give it that.
truly weird album to release in 2016.
