watching the discourse over this one has been so frustrating. I didn't get to make it to the rally yesterday because I'm a little exhausted and needed a day off, but andy has been a fixture on the far right here since 2016 and seeing people treat this like it's people unfairly attacking some neutral journalist as opposed to attacking someone who has aided a lot of patriot prayer's worst harassment campaigns is total bullshit. he literally got his public profile from recruiting white nationalists to join and take over the portland state "free thinkers" club during 2016 and was helping coordinate with infowars to bring militia dudes to break up anti-trump protests during the election.

if you want to argue about the ethics of punching people at a counter protest, go for it, but treating it like it's some abstract antifa on journalists violence is total fucking bullshit

where was jake tapper moralizing while andy was following patriot prayer around while they were wandering around town assaulting people? why wasn't he outraged when they were literally hiding stockpiles of guns in parking garages? or when they shut down a parade in a POC neighborhood while andy gleefully filmed and defended them because free speech? weird how those things don't rise to the point of being worth noting

It’s a lot to ask of CNN’s main politics guy to do some basic googling before he starts spewing diarrhea on Twitter

there were two separate right wing protests, one by proud boys and another by patriot prayer under their "#himtoo" anti-feminism banner and a local coalition called POPMOB did a big counter protest.

last summer they found groups of right wingers hiding guns in parking garages and the chief of police used that as pretext to teargas counter-protesters because they "could've been planted by antifa"

this goes without saying, but local reporters have dug into the concrete milkshake thing and so far none have turned up any evidence to substantiate it, despite the fact that national news outlets have been running with it all morning.

it really sucks because one of this city's underrated strengths is that we have a ton of really talented local journalists and so far they've gotten completely ignored by national media even though they've been reporting on this ongoing story for years.

Cops and local reporters fucking eat up urban legend danger type shit with a spoon

It’s just like they’re all obsessed with the idea that you can OD on fentanyl by touching it

serious q for journo people: isn't it standard for national journalists to check with local reporters when writing about a city that they don't live in? it seems like it should be standard but basically every local journalist who has been covering this stuff has said that they're being ignored

this is true in a lot of cases, but generally isn't the case here. most of our big local journalists have a really antagonistic relationship with the police because of how blatantly dishonest they are

That’s good. I wish more local reporters wouldn’t take police spokespeople as the word of god.

lmao no

like a handful of actually thoughtful/humble people might do this but local journos absolutely hate the national press 95%+ of the time for precisely this reason: they swoop in, write about shit they don't have any knowledge about, and don't listen to the people on the ground. the best reporters i know don't do this but the best reporters i know also don't work for the national pubs

making matters more fun, the opposite also happens: the kind of local (especially TV!) reporting feech is talking about will get amplified by lazy hot-takers

the press fucking sucks! sometimes it is really good but more often it is bad!

Yeah most of the stuff I’m thinking of probably comes from TV reporters

Feels like most stories about the police saying crazy urban legend stuff are linked from sites with call letters in the URL.

tv reporting is just on a whole other level

when i was a cops/courts intern i was assigned to watch every single one of the local 5pm news shows at once to make sure we hadn't missed a story

in my experience:

(a) the national print reporters think they are above the local guys
(b) the national cable people are too lazy/have an agenda/etc. to even bother

this is not everyone! smart reporters definitely rely on local knowledge, come into town, take people to meals, etc. but not everyone. and even if you're willing to do that a lot of national reporting just doesn't trickle down to the next granular level that it needs to, because you don't have the sources, because those are relationships the local folks have
