Yo what is the take on Mel Magazine? They seem to do consistently interesting work, but also they're a side project of dollar shave club/Gillette? I have been kind of avoiding them because of it, but maybe it doesn't matter who's funding the writing as long as the writing is good and they're not like, totally evil? Inspired by this piece on Hawaii and colonialism https://melmagazine.com/en-us/story/haw ... ou-anymore

my lukewarm take is that people at NBC really believe that what ronan is doing is hostage-taking and not real journalism like they do

if you've ever reported on reporters, which i have, they are the quickest group in the world to shut the fuck up if they think the story won't be kind to them

Overall I’ve found the Lauren Duca saga delightful (outside of the part where she was being abusive to ESL students) but it feels like it’s about to take a dark turn

Good to see the journalism community coming together to finally do some rigorous self-examination over... Northwestern’s student paper?

yeah it's real bad

i think the fundamental thing is text messages still feel much more personal than a phone call or a reach-out on social media

this didn't warrant 2 minutes of thought, consideration or discussion though

What media companies do you all give money to/subscribe to? It's hard to figure out whose deserving. Like I read nymag a lot, but I'm not giving money to a place that employs Jon chait and Andrew sullivan. Similar issues with dailies like nyt and Wapo.

Right now for me:
- La times trial. It's okay, but it has local to me news in a nationalish pub. Politics don't seem to be terrible. Not sure if will keep it.
- Financial times. Need something with daily econ/business content and it seems like the least terrible. Also these all have insane paywalls, so I'm inevitably going to pay for one.
- I donate to some nonprofit ones like Colorado Independent and LA Taco, but I wish there were like a really good nonprofit daily i could support. Like the new York times but not capitalist.
