goose island's sofie has been my most craved beer lately. so light and crisp but still flavorful and incredibly drinkable.

Have y'all heard about Surly's 4th Anniversary beer to be released early next year?

Iced Double Espresso Milk Stout.

chew on that. i'm not sure anything like that exists, or has been attempted. I also wonder if the 'Iced' refers to freezing the brew to up the alcohol content.

just finished my magic hat samples. fresh from the blog..

Magic Hat Odd Notion Winter 09 - Here's a beer that looks like a ginger ale when poured in the glass - a dark transparent brownish gold color with little head. The nose is fermented apple, and maybe a hint of sourdough bread. The front is bitter like vinegar, and the finish is bready and lingering sour apple - there's not any sort of sweetness, just old apple cider flavor. Despite being only 4.5% ABV, the beer is heavy in mouthfeel.

I'm not sure I like this - it's sort of a sour beer with training wheels - but Gina finished her half in no time.

Magic Hat Howl Winter Seasonal - Another sort of training wheels beer, this one takes on the smoke beer category. A deep dark brown color and a healthy head show up in the glass, and a nose of pretzels, roasted malt, and maybe a hint of root beer await. The beer starts and finishes smokey, but it's not that overpowering smoke that you'd get out of something like a Schlenkerla. If you've ever wanted to try a smoke beer, or found that you didn't it when you did try, you might give this one a shot. It's got that light lager mouthfeel and only gets better the warmer it gets.

The Magic Hat beers in this diary were provided to me for sampling by the Magic Hat Brewery, South Burlington, VT. I received the beer under no obligation to review it.

Guy Incognito wrote:Hey, i'm drinking a Howl right now. you may not know, but Howl is actually the Black Lager of their now defunct Orlio Organic line, just repackaged. i personally really like it and find it's a perfect session beer for a 5 degree, blustery night like tonight.

i didn't know that and wasn't aware that there was an Orlio Organic line. I'll look that up. I just drink whatever they send me because it's free beer.

thanks for the heads up.

ive only had the saxo. hard to compare the two. the nostradamus is a dark vs. saxo being a pale. it is a nice, clean dry brew though. the high ABV doesnt smack you around, its pretty well balanced.

yeah they're pretty much just chicago and indiana, though they just expanded production a little bit and moved some into kentucky. i don't think they wanna get much bigger, they had to expand just to keep up with where they're at already.

A lot of breweries get crazy hype just because their stuff is scarce but I'd say Floyds actually lives up to the hype.

Finally got some of this last night. It was good but I wasn't blown away, kind of disappointed since it was almost $10 a bottle.

Just saw that there's some on ebay for $25/bottle + $9 shipping. Dang.

I dont know what to drink tonight. I made some ginger ale last night so I'll be trying that.
I've been digging Bell's double cream stout lately so if they've got it across the street I'll grab that but im not sure they will.

Any recommendations are very welcome

Tomorrow I might grab a bottle of Jolly Pumpkin's christmas brown. Tried a friend's last night and it tasted exactly like the brown ale I just bottled.
