i should watch the sub, just for keaton. sorta had a similar experience where i enjoyed it on first watch, but wasn't blown away — and now every time i rewatch i find more and more that i love.

I somehow misremembered this with "When Marnie Was There" as your top pic. Because both have images of people standing on a beach as their thumbnail on HBO+?

Anyways it made for much better watching of Marnie bc the whole time I kept saying "wow I'm really surprised this is [Zardoz]'s favorite ghibli."

Oops no Ocean Waves is the other beach thumb one. So yeah I just mixed up two different movies.

Marnie is amazing though, another one of these where there's just not a single other movie telling that story. Like if you want to watch a movie where an action army man blows stuff up there are three million to choose from, you want a movie like this, there's not so many options.

Though I do think it would have been better released under the original, more literally translated title: Gay for GrandmaToggle Spoiler

The twist thing at the end of Marnie drove me nuts

I'm watching ronja the robber's daughter, ignoring the weird faces, and it's great. I've avoided it for a while because of the animation style but I enjoy it so much I don't really care anymore.

We watched ponyo for the first time recently. Pretty wacky movie with intensely beautiful animation

That song at the end was in the English dub only...right?

When I watched most of the Miyazakis for the first time last year, Totoro was the one that really captured my 10/11 year old's attention. The Wind Rises is tremendous but it's the only one that would have bored me as a kid.

Castle in the Sky is definitely underrated

I don't really care for Howl's and Kiki is kinda whatever for me but every other Miyazaki is a stone cold classic imo

webinar, if your kid likes avatar, i think nausicaa and castle in the sky are probably the closest in spirit to that. but it's hard to go wrong really.

i watched wind rises for the first time recently, and i thought it was fantastic. feels like an appropriate encapsulation of and commentary on miyazaki's entire career

I probably posted about this upthread, but watching Spirited Away for the first time last summer, and going outside at dusk right afterwards with my eyes and heart wide open and the world softly lit up all pink and magical, was a real high point of last year.

people dislike howls?

think that one is the most emotional for me for sure

everything it expresses about aging and self-worth is a lot to take but it’s so good ;(
