first season gets a bad rap

presently, riker is banging an amazonian president while the rest of the away team counsels a despondant macgyver lookalike

Posting in this thread. I'll probably start this up after I finally finish Babylon 5 (which is starting to get less interesting in Season 4)

I loved star trek and this show when I was a kid but I couldn't make it with a rewatch. Hard to tell if the acting or the writing is clunkier.

The whole thing is like a poem you write to your crush when you're 15, except your crush is the nerds in my office who cite Malcolm Gladwell and the poem is a Rush song.

I do like how all the sounds on the ship have a small amount of reverb on them.

Just resumed this about two weeks ago. Been a good year and a half working through TNG. Going to chalk that up to time dilation, which seems to have no effect on anybody in this show.

watched Tapestry the other day. the lesson here is you have to be a colossal douche in your youth if you want to amount to anything.

even jean-luc picard, a cultured and sensitive man of letters.

I can no longer think about this episode without thinking of the thread here that was something like "Who's the most shook bitch in all of fiction" and someone came up with blue-shirt Picard

Edit: Oh, it was just "who is the shookest bitch in Star Trek canon" and universe hit upon the right answer first:

Kafkaesque is far more knowledgeable than me on this, but it sounds like Roddenberry bears a lot of the blame for the first two seasons being so bad. As I understand it, he wanted a show which was devoid of most personal conflict because in the future people were too highly evolved for that kind of stuff

Yeah this is a big part of it. The writing staff for the first few seasons was like a revolving door. Early on Gene had stacked his crew with a lot of the old guard from TOS: DC Fontana, David Gerrold, Bob Justman, none of whom lasted because they just got steamrolled by Gene. Once Michael Piller takes over as showrunner in S3 is when TNG starts to solidify.
