What's your favorite G.B.V. song

tim heidecker jokingly improvised some gbv lyrics on his show, a fan sung them to home recorded music, and it actually sounds like a good gbv song

yeah, that's a weirdly solid/ramshackle one

my intro to gbv was 'under the bushes, under the stars'

then i went backwards and started w/ the first album forward

a weirdo lo-fi epic

On the first wave of GBV reunion shows, I drove down to Portland to meet with some Vancouver pals (the Tough Age crew) and ended up hanging out with Tim Heidecker (I'm good friends with his wife since high school - first at some adult arcade and later an empty gay bar)... weirdly I've always associated GBV + Tim so this is weird

i found these great compilations on slsk of the gbv golden era, one is called suitcase curated and it's divided up by year of recording and the other is a live compilation of the classic era 92 - 96 which includes every unique song they played. its really great

someone posted that heidecker GBV bit somewhere on the board a year or so ago and it's what got me into listening to Office Hours. Also, that cover of his GBV improv is amazing.

I can really respect him for continuously scrapping songs for better ones, but he could do no wrong at this point and all the songs that ended up on eps and singles from that era are great. Under the Bushes is my favorite (happy 25th anniversary!) and even though it exists in kind of a sloppy/indefinite form (just what are those last 6 songs? An untitled ep?) its a great progression of their sound.

I don't want to enter into a "bob releases too much music" argument, but would love a circumstance where Bob really battled with himself over the track listing to an album again, and spent 6 months adding/subtracting songs from different sessions.

agree with everything there for sure. i basically only listen to the 92 to 96 era and if i'm tired of all the regular albums i put all the non album stuff in a playlist and hit shuffle

if you're really curious about UTBUTS (it's an interesting story, with kim deal, steve albini, the power of suck, etc) and the untitled ep, check this out:

it's a nice overview from a bob obsessive (who doesn't pull punches when he doesn't like something)

it's actually a podcast, so you can check it out that way instead

That's great and I hadn't heard it. I am a huge mark for Bob's 80s Stipe/power pop vocals phase. All that midrange reverb and little glissandos on the syllables.

edit: Actually that "Up We Go" is kind of sick too. Electric guitar psych naivete Bob is also a favored 80s mode. Real mysterious lineage on it too: https://www.gbvdb.com/track.asp?trackid=30583

Yeah that's one of the 269 songs on the GBVDB "unreleased" list, considered to be a "fan titled" song, and first showed up real early on the Guided by Beer comp: https://www.gbvdb.com/album.asp?albumid=2156
