I might have walked past you as I went to Danny Boy's to get slices for the second day in a row while on jury duty.

Also I got a pita wrap at GCM when I did jury duty right before covid hit

and got mad sick I think from taking the metro lol

When one of the lawyers eliminated me from the case on Day 2 everyone in the crowd let out an audible “awwww” lol

I said I’ve worked there before and can relate that’s why they axed me

It was UPS versus some hothead that would yell and cuss at the workers and had been there 10+ years

I was like good luck lol

Edited to add branzino’s post

chilaquiles at tacos delta were awesome. textbook comfort food

caught a gorgeous 35mm print of minne & moskowitz at the secret movie club tonite. really loved the space and craig’s introduction. the projection was on point. if I lived here I’d be a regular. new york has a great film scene but could stand to more openly foster a community by programming more classics. I’m all for programming obscure + arthouse films, but I like variety... high and low. it’s like a dj who never plays the hits. they’re classics for a reason, dog

the upcoming programming is dope: the deer hunter tmrw, fassbinder x sirk this weekend, hard to be a god, black christmas on 35, berlin alexanderplatz…

Sounds like a rad shirt.

I had 45 minutes to kill so I breezed through MOCA. Every time I go, I'm glad they made it free...

the bike lanes on washington blvd in culver are legit just cop traps, they got me on a left turn just now. talked to the Hi Lo guys and they said every resident and business there is upset, the bike lanes are only causing problems and cops on bicycles now patrol the neighborhood regularly

i was as cordial as possible and they even said i was a "good man" after making me sign a slip of paper very quickly but instead of a ticket the slip was a promise to appear in court, is that normal? this was my first time being pulled over in LA so i don't know how that usually goes here

ugh I looked into it further and I'm being issued an infraction, I'll have to pay a fine and take a point on my license.

I don't see how I would be able to fight this, I genuinely didn't notice the cops biking towards me as I was making my left turn and only realized one of them was close at the very end of the turn. It's not like contact was made or anything and I kept driving down the street until I realized they were both biking after me and were very clearly cops.

I told someone in grocery store in downtown Cincinnati that my home base was LA and they said “don’t you like it better here?” and I didn’t realize they were serious.

I will say that I love Cincinnati. But I love LA so much more.

I liked LA a lot. enough to move there. it doesn’t have all the perks of new york (like good public transit), but as a non-drinker bars closing early doesn’t bother me, the weather’s better, people tend to have more space for less money, & the cheap food is significantly better

Glad you liked it LSR. I think it’s a pretty great city. There’s so much fun stuff to do even if a lot of the best things are about entertainment that has been hampered by covid. Looks like we almost crossed paths a few times while you were here, including Jitlada which is only a couple blocks away. Like a lot of cities I suppose living here is really colored by what circles you run in. Most of the time I’m delighted by the chill exuberance and weirdo acceptance of the culture. And then very occasionally it’s possible to wander into the shithead side and feel pissed off. But I’ve experienced that same thing in San Francisco and New York and London too.

Meanwhile my partner and I are trying to find a two-bedroom and what the fuck, how did rent go up this much after just a few years living here??

2019: moving to LA, $1800 is our top limit for a 1-bedroom. We end up paying $2100 for a place we like (formerly a bad neighborhood but close to metro and shops).

Jan 2020: move into a better unit in the same building: $2200

April 2020: Pandemic! Do we stick it out or move to the boonies? We stay. Surely the prices will come down.

They didn’t.

End 2021: we need more space to accommodate forever work from home. 2-bedrooms in a formerly bad area: $2900.

2022: Christ who knows. I guess we’re now trying for a mortgage.

Now the other one bedroom units we share paper-thin walls with are filled with young couples with their first child who make a shit ton of noise. This place was designed for a single person making a modest but reasonable wage. Whatever, I have my giant TV and it yawns me into the oblivion.

$2500 for a roomy 2 bedroom with an attached garage, sandwiched between highland park and south pasadena for me.

i'm still kind of saving up for a house because i can afford a mortgage but i couldn't be happier where i'm at.

I pay $1100 utilities included for a sardine can studio apartment that I am now trapped in forever. Can't believe I've been here for over eight years.
