Could someone explain this election to me and Canadian politics to an American like me? What is this election and why is it important?

wouldn't mind an explainer about why this happened

surely if the last time a party even slightly to the left was in power in ab was the 20s there's some massive fuckup on the part of the tories at play here

this is the actual equivalent of a democrat landslide in texas, and the republican president is from texas, and the texan city he is from winning almost no republican districts

the chances of this happening were 0.0000000% before the drop in oil prices in the winter. the conservatives had a majority for 44 years

this is all kind of reminding me of western australia who have a conservative government that didn't bother doing anything with their massive windfall from the spike in iron ore prices, rearranged their tax system around the assumption that iron ore would be hella expensive forever and are now trying to get the feds to bail them out now that they're getting 30c on every dollar of taxation their state pays and all the mines are closing

so basically alberta's going through the same thing and their government couldn't try and blame ottawa like wa did?

it hasn't gotten to bailouts or closures yet but otherwise seems similar yeah. except it is much more understandable to lazily base your economy around iron ore than tar sands oil
