Tropes:
* Cats
* Music references, especially jazz and classical music (this part is fine with me, I'm always down to download a new album)
* Detailed descriptions of cooking (I'm whatever about)
* Sexual stuff (completely unerotic to me, I've always wondered if it's a translation thing because it's like legit "My penis was hard now")
* 90% of the protagonists are the same exact "notably and anonymously average japanese man who loves to cook, listen to jazz and has a missing woman problem but sleeps with other women in the meantime") More than a few of these are named (when named at all) Toru or Toru Watanabe I read once is supposed to be a "John Smith" style very common name

I say all this and at the same time I think a lot of his books are really really good.

The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle is probably his "masterpiece" and it's really great, Kafka on the Shore is the one I love the most, and Norwegian Wood is the one that made him famous, is one of his "most normal" and is also really good and decent length.

I'd read any of those before reading anything else by him.

Non-fiction, but his Underground: The Tokyo Gas Attack and the Japanese Psyche is excellent as well

Glad you posted this. Didn't know he wrote that

hello...thanks user deadbass. basically three human girls are stolen away to the world of fey. they are brought up with fairies, who often treat them cruelly, as they tend to think less of mortals. i love the classic mythology ("fairies can't lie but will bend the truth") mixed with rly current anecdotes of how humans are hoodwinked (lured in via burning man loll) etc.

there are many hot fairies, lies, murder, and court life intrigue! also a lot of fantasy tends to be rly whitewashed/eurocentric so it's refreshing to see something a bit different. i enjoyed it v much and think it would appeal to fans of Vampire Diaries, purple girls & more

It's a trilogy, the next one comes out in January. IMO the best character is Jude. She's the morally grey heroine who wants to be a knight but also has crushes and stuff. Her older sister vivi is pretty good, but is a few degrees away from slipping into Mary Sue territory

A lot of people seem to have issues w Prince Cardan, and I totally understand it (he's arrogant, wounded, etc) but the author described him so hotly and I'm absolute trash for debauched fairy princes

I've only read the first one but I thought it was really good, a good page turner. Interesting idea bout vampires having become normalized in society but just a bit of fun. I haven't watched True Blood but I guess they get darker/more serious

NYRB Classics's two-volume edition of Uwe Johnson's Anniversaries showed up in the mail today and hoo boy, that's a lot of pages. I'm torn between either starting it after I finish my current to-read pile or putting it off to make it the first book I read in 2019.

i haven't ready her other books fyi. i like it a lot, and i enjoyed the wide span of povs and effortless switch between 3rd and 1st person depending on story. i'm at a point now though where it feels a bit redundantly depressing? the most convincing stories for me were the ones that had the wobblier stakes, w the characters that are a bit less familiar. I think she delivers on that stuff better. (so basically the non-nyc ones lol)

what did you think?

I haven't read it yet, it's been on my list for a while but I keep hearing that it's, as you put it: redundantly depressing, so it keeps slipping down the list. I'm sure I'll get to it eventually as I really like short story collections, but maybe I'll dip in and out among other things.

susan howe - debths
cool! can anyone recommend poets who do similar typographical stuff?

Image
marguerite duras - destroy, she said

Image
lucy prebble - the effect

Image
janet frame - scented gardens for the blind
kind of cool! some really great stuff mixed in with some bad choices. i give it a...three-quarters-cool

Image
langston hughes - the weary blues

Image
tito mukhopadhyay - the mind tree

Image
claire louise-bennett - pond

Image
marie redonnet - hôtel splendid
very beckettian novella about this woman who has an inherited a hotel in a swamp that is falling apart. a lot of stuff imitates beckett and is bad but redonnet actually knows why beckett's good. will end up on my best of 2018 list for sure.

This is excellent. A sober examination of the last ten years of economic policy around the world. Largely free of polemic, but just in telling the story blow-by-blow it is incredibly damning of nearly every principal actor in the US and Europe.
