damn i know there's been plenty of debate on this topic, and i don't have the answers, but that approach removes so many films of artistic and historic merit
i watched A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood -- there's a few individually affecting moments for sure, but this movie is wrongheaded and absurd from the very first scene and just dives further and further into a pretty bad idea. i suppose the impulse was to avoid a by the books biopic, especially after the documentary did everything that needed to be done on that score, but by and large what they landed on was mostly silly and off-putting.
I too liked Vivarium, I thought it was great how intentionally creepy it was.
I saw Inland Empire again, one of my favorite movies, noticed a few more things about it this time around, some of the themes hit harder this time, and the music/sound in it was great, as were the bunnies! I think he made a short of just the bunnies that I should try and see sometime.
Rabbits was a series he did for his web site back in the day and then re-worked it into Inland Empire. I think some of the stuff in Inland was re-shot for the movie but it's been a while and I don't remember all the details of how that came together.
What became of her? She lived, as she liked to say, off the kindness of gentlemen. I assume she’s dead.
Dug this. Always happy to watch a new horror / thriller. Anything about suburbia really gets me going too. Some things felt unexplored or left too open for interpretation, but I definitely appreciated the tone of this film. Love Jesse Eisenberg too.
I hate this kid more than the Babadook kid, which is an impressive feat.

Yesterday I watched Risky Business for the first time in about 30 years. Now it's my new obsession. Basically all I remembered was Tom Cruise dancing and Curtis Armstrong yelling about Guido the killer pimp, so I was expecting a cheesy teen comedy. Which it is, and it does have some good funny moments, but it's also run through with darker undercurrents, themes of Reagan-era capitalism, sexual and romantic fixation/fascination, a dream girl like none other, and a transifxing electronic score that pulls you into a heightened state of expectation. The balance of tones is weird and wonderful. The director's original ending is also so much better than the theatrical version.
