american dharma - 2018 - errol morris

i love morris but sheesh. so much potential wasted. morris basically lets bannon direct the documentary, and fails to ask obvious questions or push back on contradictions in bannon's worldview. (for example, in what sense is bannon - a former investment banker - promoting anything like 'economic populism'? total bs and not credible) still worth seeing, i guess, if only to replay how bannon and breitbart smashed hilary and elevated trump into presidential office.

I can't bring myself to watch this, basically for the reasons you outlined in the first half of this post. It was pretty depressing seeing Errol on Twitter talking about free speech/political correctness & why this film didn't get distribution

it's well made and you should see it if you care about US politics, but sort of pathetic. morris is in the film a lot, and apologizes for voting for hillary and just sputters about in the interviews, as if bannon were some genius political tactician. he has this aura of heroism because morris compares him to a bunch of badass characters from westerns and hollywood war movies. it would be like if the act of killing only showed the indonesian killers in their fantasy state, without puncturing their self-aggrandizement at all.

finally got through bad lieutenant: port of call New Orleans after trying (not very hard) almost every year since it's been released. It's fine. For some reason I really like big risky bets as a plot device - if Brad Dourif is the bookie even better.

when people talk about the iguana it always seemed they were fixated on nic cage's relationship with the iguana. But the really bonkers thing is herzog's relationship with the iguana. The breakdancer scene... man

They're asking if it's up on the Dropbox.

The French DVD is out on October 15th so it won't be too much longer, although I don't think there are English subtitles.

Loved this.
Image
Blood On The Moon (1948)- Robert Wise
Loved this. Loved the performances from Mitchum, Bel Geddes and Brennan.
Image
Blowing Wild (1953)- Hugo Fregonese
This was great. Strong performances all round.
Image
Born To Dance (1936)- Roy Del Ruth
This ruled. Powell's tap dancing was great and watching James Stewart try his best to sing and dance was great.
Image
Brass Target (1978)- John Hough
Liked it.
Image
Breaker Morant (1980)- Bruce Beresford
Loved this. All the performances were great.
Image
Breaking The Waves (1996)- Lars von Trier
Incredible and harrowing. Emily Watson's performances was amazing.

ash is the purest white - i fell asleep. ymca scene seemed cool.
johhnie to's office - nice set design but a little too broad. also the adr seemed really off in parts. maybe it's better in 3d.

I've been catching some showings at the London Film Festival

Image
Maggie (d. Yi Okseop)
Capital Q quirky but also enjoyable and good. Strong Murakami short story vibez

Image
The Miracle of the Sargasso Sea (d. Syllas Tzoumerkas)
Not exactly the wild ride promised by the director in his introduction but intermittently interesting in a sub-Lynchian way. I loved how rude and unreasonable Angeliki Papoulia's character was in every single scene

Image
The Personal History of David Copperfield (d. Armando Iannucci)
I've watched almost everything Iannucci has ever been involved in, and this feels completely out of character. A gentle, feelgood period comedy. Visually and tonally it's unrecognisable as Iannucci but weirdly has the hammy, theatrical quality of every Dev Patel movie I've ever seen. It has charming moments but feels toothless. And we're not meant to be rooting for Uriah Heep in this story, are we?

Love Is Colder Than Death (Fassbinder, 1969)

It's a little overboard on the nouvelle vague but I ended up liking it a lot. Really impressive as a debut (the Clerks of its time??) every shot is framed perfectly.

Movie Marathon, city lockdown edition:

sAd Astra- Good. Gonna read all the Gray interviews but at least some of this voiceover has to have been forced right? First 20 minutes it seemed especially extraneous. Basically the better interstellar. Made me realize that I like High Life more than I thought strangely enough

Gemini Man- I saw this in 3D and HFR and the combination felt so strange, very much like a "theme park ride" lol. That said the movie itself was fine, but nearly everything about the story feels recycled and derivative. Lee is good at action scenes imo, but the format felt too unnatural in the scenes outside of that.

Joker- I love Phoenix so I expected to have a soft spot for this, but all the calls for it being empty and numb are spot on. The production itself is cosplay of other films obv so really no value in seeing it whatsover.

Ready or Not- Fun light genre fare. Not to pile on to heavy into the Scorcese stuff, but this is the type of ride I enjoy. Brody is decent, give him more work.

Pain and Glory- Affecting. Don't think I've seen Banderas be better.

so i think I'd seen Close Encounters of the Third Kind like 10+ years ago, but didn't remember much outside of some of the imagery

rewatched it this weekend after recently rewatching ET, and man it just did not do much for me. usually spielberg can get me emotionally but this movie just felt like a bunch of stuff happening. some good imagery, performances, and music, but yeah especially right after ET which is one of my fave movies of all time, this just felt OKAY. plus i just saw Jaws for the first time a couple years ago and loved it, so I expected this to be a similar thing
