Pet Sematary (2019): Dreary and pointless. Original movie so much better. You can't replace Fred Gwynne.

safe in hell is so good! william a. wellman goes unrecognized for his pre-code work that would've accelerated filmmaking if not for that damn hayes.

I have way too much time on my hands since completing my diploma, which I will admit I'm very ashamed about due to my failure of trying to find work.

Ive been watching some streaming (and steaming) crap on a russian website, turds that are still in theaters or at least not yet on dvd

First, Brightburn which obviously has a good concept but in execution was just very bad. If you don't know it's Superman's origin story but if he was a villain...how did WB let that happen though? like every detail is the same, they're even in Kansas. This is apparently set in the same universe as James Gunn's Super which i haven't seen since but that i remember enjoying back when it came out and if they want to expand that into a universe (which could be sorta cool? like it could offer a nice indie contrast to MCU and DC), they'll have to be making much better movies than this. I liked the end credits though, there was a nice, kinda chilling aspect to seeing Superevilboy just causing mass catastrophes everywhere around the world without anybody being able to do a damn thing about it. You see this and you think, yep, this is very much why Batman planned ahead...

And then, whoa boy, Godzilla: King of monsters which is dismal and which ending offers a fantasy i found kinda offensive. Big monsters save the environment and ecosystems so that we can keep our asshole lifestyle, yay! wouldn't that be nice? Plus the bad guys subscribe to the Thanos logic and again i'm in this position where i want the "bad guys" to win yet know they won't. To be fair, aside from the first titans fighting scene which was horrible, the other monster fighting scenes are well made enough but anything else in this movie is bad in a disaster movies of the 90's kind of way and how did this suddenly become an alternate reality in which they have advanced tech that allows some sort of MCU like air cruiser anyway? I thought the first godzilla movie showed some promise despite being very flawed, the human element was boring but... not as bad as in this. They learned nothing, this got worse. As for Kong, which i saw a few months back, this was probably only marginally better than this which doesn't mean much as they are both bad. But yeah...sure...i'll check out the next one to see Godzilla and Kong fight...because why wouldn't you?
I must insist on being a pessimist, I'm a loner in a catastrophic mind

The Souvenir

Image

probably the film of the year so far. beautifully shot, beautifully told, personal and meta and layered but without ever being complex or grandiose. a mid-story excursion to Venice doesn't even feel like you've gone somewhere else with them. everything is so painfully interior and cramped. you're stuck with julie and anthony and they are toxically stuck with each other. the film is full of truly beautiful shots all framed and staged perfectly. hogg uses their shared apartment so well as it begins to show signs of their volatile relationship in cracked mirrorsm, messy beds and vibrating chandeliers. this killed me, i guess. the final moments make up the most poignant finale i've seen in a film in a long time.
