I watch a lot of Ramsay’s cooking competitions. He usually shit on contestants that are vegan. He usually is baffled of how they can possibly compete.

i mean, i totally agree with you. being vegan is cheaper than an omni diet if you cook veggies and legumes at home. i'm just saying that for a lot of people, there's a whole constellation of habits and beliefs influenced by income, class, and location that feed into perceiving vegan food as too expensive.

I went to an Aldi in a poor area of South Bend, Indiana that had almost no fresh produce. No spinach, no avocados, hardly anything fresh - the shelf space was all reserved for pre-packaged junk. Food deserts are a real thing.

that's a bummer

I do notice that when I go to certain Ralphs or Targets in poorer neighborhoods, there's quite a bit less vegan products than I'm used to seeing at those places

some dude got owned all over Twitter a few weeks ago because he insulted a photo of an Asian hot pot dish with meat in it.

People were claiming that veganism was appropriation of the diets of non-western/immigrant communities.

I guess to me, so many people just see veganism as some faddy type diet trend and not a moral issue. So they want to constantly question motivations or present it as some form of voluntary elitism.

There are annoying vegans but it sucks to not only have to defend my diet choices from nuckledragging “bacon is epic” types as well as people who I am more typically aligned with in my political and social views who think I’m some snobby white bro who thinks he’s above everyone because I eat tofu.

I just don’t want to eat dead animals. And it’s cool when other people don’t either.

Frozen and canned vegetables aren’t as great as fresh but they still work.

i follow a few old friends and fitness people on ig and i get annoyed when they post their meat heavy meals, gushing about how good it is and giving it various hashtags that involve the word healthy.

awesome, mascotte! good luck on staying with it :)

brouhaha, i think it's a tricky issue that i think about a lot and that makes me a little wary of trying to push veganism on people. on one hand, i do think it's more accessible than people realize -- in a lot of the world, meat is a luxury and people's daily diets are heavily plant-based; it's only really in america/the west that people's diets are so heavily based on meat, thanks to culture/subsidies/etc. but even in america, there have been non-rich &;non-white vegans for decades.

on the other hand, it's true that it is still out of reach for people in low-income communities/food deserts. (more people get groceries from dollar stores than whole foods now: https://www.businessinsider.com/dollar-stores-taking-over-america-2018-12). people lack the resources, in terms of money/time/cooking knowledge/access to public transport (like theta mentioned) to go through with it.

but i think if you do have the ability, thinking about your dietary choices and how they impact the environment/people/animals is a good thing and should be encouraged.

Yeah that tweet was awful and the responses were interesting but at times frustrating:

And then this thread response was the one getting a lot of likes:

This is also maybe a better core image of what exactly people are criticizing:

I think the issue here isn't that there's white people who are vegan but rather a more specific subset who don't hold their veganism in tandem with other socially just causes and downplay other bad things by describing the issues around the meat industry. Unfortunately it does seem to give people the ammo to write off veganism entirely, and I'm not sure how much that subset represents of the overall number of vegans. Doesn't seem to be too large of a group to me outside of dipshits on twitter.

Mascotte, my hat is off to you. I've really enjoyed going vegan at home and scaling back on my meat consumption. I'm definitely feeling guilty about the meat/animal products I'm still consuming and wonder how long until I try to make the full jump.

That false-equivalency, culture/class insensitivity stuff got a run of Toronto vegan spots some bad press[1][2][3], and they eventually had to publicly apologize, take down a few signs, and they offered a payout to the local community to settle the dust.

A fair number of vegans here wont go near their restaurants cause they were turning into Angry & Judgemental Vegans through all their advertising and aggressive gentrification. The locals, who are working-class and not white, weren't having their hood rebranded 'Vegandale' and white, middle-class businesses come in toting signs like 'The Moral Meal' and 'Baby Steps Are For Babies'. It was exhausting to want to support them.

It seems that people that have been vegan less than 2 years are a lot more militant than those who've gone over 5. most long term vegans are more chill, encouraging and glad to help with resources and whatnot

The thing I mentioned earlier about fitness people posting their meals on IG, it's also cool when they post a vegetarian/vegan meal and there isn't really any negative comments on it. More things like "I'm trying to get in more vegetarian meals too."

When I first heard Jared Leto call himself a Cheagan(cheating vegan), which is eating a mostly vegan diet but occasionally allowing some animal ingredients except meat, I thought it was silly but now I think that's a good way for someone who is transitioning to stay the course or even someone that was committed but has been tempted to stop being. I transition between beegan and cheagan, more beegan though

I think 'cheagan' is a weird way to claim the moral high-ground without actually making the necessary sacrifice imo. Like saying I'm 'chearried' to my wife ain't gonna get me a pat on the back.

But if calling yourself anything but Not Vegan keeps you morally aware of your consumption to some degree then sure, call yourself whatever I guess. I'd prefer 'morally conscious' and even that awful 'flexitarian' term over 'cheagan' but it ain't a beauty contest, you do you Jared Leto

Yeah you don't get to claim any moral high ground with it.

I think he prefaced it with whenever/wherever he can eat purely plant based, he will, but when he's touring in foreign areas or whatever...
Could be the same for someone that's visiting a relative or out of town on business

I always used to just say I'm a vegetarian to everyone but then restaurant employees would start telling me about dishes with eggs and cheese in them, so now I say I'm vegan to them to avoid that.

I'd say quite a bit of people that call themselves vegans are actually cheagans, especially the newer/younger ones. Some of it is just from not knowing any better about ingredients. But some just like the vegan scene and being part of it without fully committing to it. There's a guy at my gym that I've seen wearing 3 different t-shirts with the word vegan on it and he told me he eats eggs everyday

conversation about made me remember the introduction to Earthlings. do you all remember it and if so what do you think? specifically, the comparison of factory farming to the Holocaust. I thought it was well argued with the appropriate caveats.

after committing to meditating regularly i'd get these weird waves of eww off of meat

i truly believe humanity's future rests in a purely plant based diet

yet, i eat vegan at home like 5 days a week, while allowing myself a burger/steak and a beer/wine on weekends

cause i'm crazy like that

all these fast food places offering vegan options only shows the inevitably of the life power which doesn't dig us eating our brothers and sisters
