This was where a certain David Jones got the name from when he decided to change it to prevent confusion with the other David Jones of The Monkees!

am constantly amazed/enthralled by the fact that he used the harmonica part (lower key obv) from 'new career in a new town' in his last sequenced song, 'i can't give everything away'

i'm sure it's been mentioned in this thread a bunch but still

Yeah, I can't listen to Blackstar much. An unbelievable swan song.

Was it "You Feel So Lonely You Could Die" where he re-uses the drums from Five Years? I originally thought that was a great ending as well.

What is the deal with this video? Why's some dude in an American Flag Bugle Boy polo on drums? Who are the third-rate Dick Tracy villain schlubs on guitar? Why did they shoot this in a Ruby Tuesday's? What's with Dave's bullfighter dance???

No. Not at all. "Young Americans" and "Fame" aside, it's really forgettable and I've listened to it lots. It never goes anywhere for me.

I dunno man, it's got a serious groove. I always avoided it in favor of the more challenging works of the era (and even Hunky Dory), but I seem to be going through a phase with it. "Right" in particular is just the cat's ass.

it's not the side effects of the cocaine.

I really like that version though. Also Bowie's jacket.

Lookit this. I mean he was practically his most messed up and psychotic here and with Station to Station, but also somehow at the height of his powers.

If Bowie had left Across the Universe off and put on Who Can I Be Now, which is probably a top 10 Bowie song, Young Americans would be top shelf for sure.

Everything between the opening and the closing track just sounds so unremarkable in comparison. I can't get into it.

I get that. And was there for a long time. It's a time and place album I think. You need to be in sync with it. Is Across the Universe good? Not really, but there are actually some ok moments in it for me where he's kind of going apeshit with his voice.

I can see this too.

I think the only other song that immediately grabbed me is "Win", which is just another all-timer for me.

His 1970-1980 run is just ridiculous. Very very few have done it as well for as long.

Even as someone not often moved by celebrity deaths, his death did really bum me out for a good while.

Yeah same. I actually had kind of a total mental breakdown in feb 2016 mostly related to other stuff, but it feels so soundtracked by blackstar and his death and yeah

prince hit similarly but possibly just because of the context of this just awful year and it felt like a cruel joke

and it's cool he's in some weird videogame and Twin Peaks and a Jim Henson movie, etc
