If I made an absolute fortune that late in my life and HBO was already doing the hard work for me I would effin coast my way to the grave sailing boats and popping bottles.

john plainman wrote:hot take: i would DEFINITELY prefer to read some concise, world-building short stories than whatever trash the convoluted jesus quest winds of winter would have been. the show has already taken over the task of finishing that mess. good for railroad imo.

Both versions of the story are so fucked in their own ways at this point, best to just let the show play out and read storm of swords again.

He wrote most of this fake history shit years ago dudes. I doubt it’s cutting into Winds of Winter time (which is not to say he’s working hard on that)

Funny that it’s only ‘part one’ tho

Finally, one commenter, expressing what I suspect is the general sentiment of a lot of fans, said that “We want to know [more] about Jon Snow not Targaryen history.” Martin’s response:

Lots of people want Targaryen history. And Dunk & Egg stories. And Wild Cards books. Some even want more Haviland Tuf stories, or a sequel to FEVRE DREAM, or that 1890s journalism novel I never finished.

You don’t happen to be one of them, I get it. But you don’t speak for everyone. Far from it.

lol

anybody remember that youtube channel that has extensive multipart series on deep lore / theory crafting, a lot of it revolving around marwyn?

i know that probably describes a hundred youtube channels but i know his videos have popped up in various GoT threads before

I expect the end of the show to be not great, but visually it will be satisfying.

Fire and Blood was really, really good for the most part (so are all the other prequel texts). While Aegon the Conquerer is still sort of unknowable in a really stupid idyllic way, the fleshing out he did on Aenys, Maegor, and Jaehaerys I's reign was fantastic world building, and so was the aftermath of The Dance of the Dragons and Aegon The Unlucky's reign (especially the weirdness of that king himself, and Tyland Lannister was a really compelling dude)

Dance with Dragons was really, really good to me on reread outside of the terrible Jar Jar Binks world of Meereen. I liked Tyrion's arc even though he was mostly helpless throughout it, and I loved Theon's arc and the minor Northern house shit. I'm optimistic Winds of Winter would be good if he ever finishes it based on a couple of the sample chapters I've read a few times (Aeron Damphair in Euron's ship, and "Mercy").

I don't know if he'll finish it - he's apparently stuck on a character he regrets killing and doesn't know how to tell the story without.
