Fine. It's something I wanted to avoid but if you want to see a really great, extremely informal, yet technically impenetrable set of paintings, check out the Richard Aldrich show that was just up at Gladstone.

Mostly because I am not that interested in painting as a categorical excretion/exception within the fractured field that is the contemporaneous designation of art today, even though it is nestled in soundly mostly because of market forces and other weird homeristic tendencies from nostalgic critics and Internet art writers.

thread is young bb boy, make what you want happen.

this does make think about how lame it is that paintings are inherently more valuable in an art market than prints, for example. but thinking about art in terms of a market is so flat and pretty much takes you down a nasty lazy river of myopic concerns. there's nothing really wrong with the format though, just something in its status as consumable art object.

if I may, I'd love to reccomend a very accessible book called the contemporaries written by my old professors good friend, roger white, who actually happens to be a painter that shows w Rachel uffner in the LES.

He talks with a small number of artists that exist on a shifting scale with/apart from the market (aka LA/NYC/major insitutions), starting w the OP Dana Schutz and viewing her work through the lens of its relation to a skewing/revival of the general art economy and goes through someone like John riepenhoff who runs a gallery space in Milwaukee and onto other marginal people who make more ephemeral work that may or may not deserve more recognition than they've gotten.

All this to say that a non-hierarchical, reflexive approach towards not just medium, but ones own reception of work, may be the most ethical/generous.

See, but I love painting, and have studied painting for a really long time -- and I just think that the painters that are in fact the most interesting are those that are less bound to its medium specific traits, of which SO many painters in this moment are extremely bound to -- which I understand mostly as a strategy/vacuum within which to give the most credence ($$$$) to one's work, but has become quite dull.

the weirdest part about you making this kind of argument, though, is your staunch refusal to demonstrate this well of 'unbound' painters. especially when no one is really denying your claim but it's like walking into a blue room and being like UGH THIS ROOM IS ONLY BLUE. Also if you want to talk about things the way that you do (and im glad you want to talk about it), you should probably throw down some concrete examples. in other words, what painters are you referring to?

See but then it would create a groundswell of comparisons and this versus that, that imho, wouldn't be especially fair to either, and simultaneously create another meta-categorical division that doesn't/shouldn't exist.

For some completely baffling reason they're only showing it for four days (it closes tomorrow) when everything else in the Open Plan series is getting two+ weeks, but I can't recommend the Lucy Dodd show currently up at the Whitney enough. If we're talking 'unbound' work, these are playing brilliantly with ideas from cinema (taking them off the wall so the light in the room can give a very filmic glow to the ones parallel to the windows; the 'masking' on certain canvases seems to be making this explicit) and installation (in addition to the obvious spatial element, they're quite smelly + there's live music being performed behind several of them at different points throughout the day); they're also just overwhelmingly beautiful as paintings on every level, these photos don't come close to doing their colors and facture justice.
