Finally was able to watch "Sign o the Times" for the first time. Shit is "Stop Making Sense" level good. Definitely confirmed to me that in his prime he was the single greatest performer ever.
Today (6/7) would’ve been Prince‘s 60th birthday and with that, the Prince estate has announced a new live album, titled Piano & A Microphone: 1983, that will be out September 21. As the title implies, it’s Prince solo at the piano and was recorded during a 1983 rehearsal at Prince’s studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota. (That’s the cover art, above.) The record includes an unreleased version of “Purple Rain,” and a cover of Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You.” You can listen to “Mary Don’t You Weep,” which will be used in Spike Lee’s upcoming film BlacKkKlansman, and check out the full album tracklist, below.
Piano & A Microphone: 1983: 01 17 Days 02 Purple Rain 03 A Case Of You 04 Mary Don’t You Weep 05 Strange Relationship 06 International Lover 07 Wednesday 08 Cold Coffee & Cocaine 09 Why The Butterflies
I’m excited by any new Prince release, and I’ve already pre-ordered the deluxe LP — but this set has been circulating in nearly identical quality for 25 years. I’ll up it tomorrow for anyone who doesn’t want to wait until September.
Prince is one of my all-time faves, but when finally I heard his version, and still to this day, (perhaps because I've heard and loved it all my life) I think ol' Shinehead's version is the better one and is actually flawless. I think Prince's recorded version kinda drags a little bit until the last 1/3 or at least until the incredible backup vocals come in. I think what annoys me most though, is the constant guitar?/wurli through the leslie cab riff, but I mean, it's still an awesome song and that video definitely gave me some feels...

Here's the piano rehearsal - the first three tracks on this set are from an earlier rehearsal. The album that is being released in September starts with "17 Days". Also, until yesterday the last track was thought to be called "Mama", so that's how its labelled here: https://www83.zippyshare.com/v/4VtTipvz/file.html
yeah this blew me away. like without even thinking about it I just listened to it 4 times in a row.
Youtube comment: "this sounds like a prayer"
It's comforting to think that somewhere unfathomably far away incomprehensible beings are possibly having some kind of subjective experience of a world that possibly observes basically the same laws as our own
Having now listened to it in full, I really don't think Prince would have been pleased with the Piano & A Microphone album being made available for public consumption
