So they're only doing non-doc films.

docs might be patreon only like miyazaki but can only confirm for swimming in cambodia. stop making sense w/ Demi behind a paywall might start a war.

Not sure I'm ready for another super long series. There's only so much you can say about a director, as we saw with Burton.

Demme’s filmography is gonna cover a much wider variety of eras, genres, and contexts then Burton though

The Joker and Gemini Man eps were such a breath of fresh air after all those Miyazaki duds. I love the movies, but damn, this was their worse director series by a country mile.

Don't agree. Not all the episodes were stellar, but we got some of the best ones in recent years, the series itself was a bit of a breather, reality check after auto-piloting through Burton, and we had several episodes with people overcome with emotions and crying, which felt... real.

I thought Miyazaki got boring really fast, but I’m a Demme superfan so I’m strapped in for the next run.

i enjoyed all of the recent episodes aside from the joker and totoro. the joker because i have no interest in any takes on that movie whatsoever, totoro because they got waylaid by all their jokes with jd amato and never really got into why he thinks it's the best animated movie ever (and the expectations for any amato appearance are always so high)

I think that recording the episodes out of order harms things a bit; the progression of a director's style over time is integral here and it's hard to get at when they record this way. i guess it's impossible to do with scheduling guests, though

i havent listened to most of the miyazaki series due to a mix of not seeing the movies and the real surface-level and lack of “context” discussion of miyazaki like “what makes him tick” kinda stuff in the episodes ive heard.
i agree with every take, good/bad/hot

yah spirited away was one of their best episodes ever and i enjoyed how this mini series *clearly* pushed griffin out of his comfort zone, especially articulated in this latest Wind Rises episode where he's really wrestling with the fact that the movies he loved and has gained extreme solace from are also the same movies that are threatening to "destroy the industry" in his words . it makes sense why he could never get into miyazaki as a kid

real lol on the capn marvel commentary when frequent guest esther zuckerman was talking about her dad being a sitcom director, and then remembering david's mom is a reporter (right? or critic), and griffin's dad was a producer and the like low-level nepotism that makes it so much easier to pursue a career in media.
