they just added a bunch of bond movies to streaming in anticipation of the new one. what would you dweebs say is the most blank check bond? it’s interesting because you’d think they’d let mendez do whatever after the success of skyfall, but spectre plays especially like a movie whose plotpoints were fashioned by franchise keyholders it’s weird

the broccolis (the family who owns bond not the vegetable) are notoriously conservative creatively and they generally keep a pretty tight leash but i feel like die another day in all its ridiculous 90s excess was their blank check movie

Not really, they just talk about how some people think David talking about kissing is annoying and we know griffin reads the thread, it’s nbd

They mentioned boards more on the JD Funeral for Frames episode where they talk about reading the blank check messageboards, which could (and more likely does) mean the reddit. I just know ive been a bit more mean to JD on here, specifically about when he often alludes to stuff he “cant talk about, but we’ll talk after the show” it just seems real conspicuous and self important at its worst and, because of the shows real hangout friends vibe, kinda rude at its most benign. Other guests have done similar things here and there and even griff doesit but it comes across as accidental or helpful “not sure what im allowed to say or not” when they do it, it seems real intentional and “im in your club that, as a reminder to everyone, the listeners arent in” when jd does it probably because it happens literally every time hes on and he often volunteers it. I also said he speaks in a cadence that makes me think my bluetooth is cutting out and thats actually what I apologize for.

I didnt finish the SW commentary yet but i got to the part of david talking about how hot men are and kissing and if it was specifically for hpn i thought it very much missed the point of what we discussed here, so i assumed it was the reddit too.
i agree with every take, good/bad/hot

Logically it's gotta be Tomorrow Never Dies because it's peak post-Goldeneye hype and the movie where the bloom starts to fall of the rose. Tomorrow Never Dies and World Is Not Enough are basically the same movie, which can be said of most Bonds really. There isn't a huge drop off in quality between those two but they are certainly worse than Goldeneye and both far better than Die Another Day. Die Another Day is definitely the worst of the "modern" Bonds and may just be the worst one period. It's still kind of fun I guess.

Tomorrow Never Dies and World Is Not Enough are so evenly matched that they even both have top tier themes.

I guess in terms of budgets this new one is the biggest but i love the story production-wise of Never Say Never Again. Aside from all the wackiness that makes it possible to make: It brings back Connery, is directed by the director of Empire Strikes Back, has Max Von Sydow and Mr. Bean and is generally a huge mess of a movie

Was Goldeneye a big deal divorced from the video game?

i kind of love tomorrow never dies but there isn’t much that seems audacious creatively to me which is a big part of my criteria for what i consider a “blank check movie” (other than that insane and prescient jonathan pryce media mogul plot ofc)

if the new one flops they’ll probably let christopher nolan do his thing with it

It was a big deal in that it made a ton of money that year and that "Bond was back" etc. It was the first Bond movie in 6 years after multiple decades of having one come out every two years. I don't know that any Bond film could be classified as a big deal in the way Goldeneye the game ended up being.

The game is actually shockingly loyal to the film. All of the major set pieces appear as levels in essentially the same order as they appear in the movie. Most of the named characters appear as well, right down to dudes like Defense Minister Mishkin and CIA Agent Jack Wade.

I'm just going by the Blank Check system of the movie after breakout movie being the "Blank Check".

Each Brosnan bond movie had a larger budget than the previous. Goldeneye had the smallest budget by far, $60 mil. There's not a huge difference between the other three.

GoldenEye was also big because Brosnan had been next in line after Moore but couldn't sign on because of his Remington Steele contract, so there was a lot of FINALLY! hype in the entertainment press. And yeah, the six-year gap made it feel like A New Bond for a New Generation.

I was pretty mediocre but if I got to be Trevelyan instead of my friend Mike (we usually played at his house and he’d claim him) I was a good bit better cause of the speed boost

i thought Daltons Bond was pretty intentionally dark, especially coming out of the Moore films that got real goofy towards the end but yeah those didnt really do well i guess and Brosnan stepping in was a huge deal. i remember going to see i think goldeneye in the theater and i dont think id ever had much interest in doing that before, they were always blockbuster rentals or tv watches before goldeneye

the one timothy dalton that i saw i remember being pretty dark and cynical in tone actually so maybe goldeneye was the slightly less gritty reboot on second thought. it’s down to earth in relation to the roger moore for sure though
