Old falls apart in the third act in a way really reminiscent of the “twist reveal” of The Village but wow, the second act really hits on all cylinders. I couldn’t stop smiling or laughing for a good 45 minutes.

That’s my reaction to bonkers-level schlock. Second act has a style that is kinda akin to a less-pretentious Mother! which was (surprisingly) very entertaining. Biggest downside is they don’t actually say “there’s something wrong with this BEACH!” in the movie (though there are several exclamations that come pretty close).

Well the discourse got me. Gonna see Escape Room 2 and Old today. Picked the theater that doesn’t have reserved seats so if someone tries to sit near me I can move. using the fandango GCs I got as a stocking stuffer in 2019 :|

I was listening to a movie reviewer on the radio review this and he said, He started out with a film many regard as one of the greatest films in the history of cinema, and that is not my opinion, that is the collective opinion of movie reviewers...

yeah I'm not sure this is the right word to describe this but the "gag" involving 2 unrelated kids going through rushed puberty together and the ensuing results of their sudden fondness for each otherToggle Spoilerhad everyone cackling.

the ending is definitely one of those "don't think about it too hard, or at all" resolutions.

also M. Night's daughter was second unit director on this and the way this interview starts with her is amazing

https://variety.com/2021/artisans/news/m-night-shyamalan-daughter-ishana-old-1235026710/

How did this job come about for you?

It happened randomly. I was doing work on “Servant,” and he pitched it to me far in advance. He said, “Would you be my second unit director?”

My screening of Escape Room was empty. Except for my mom who tagged along when she heard I was taking the bus.

Old had an average sized crowd kinda spread out but not a lot of masks. One lady answered her phone. Movie was good. Classic Night. Aging sucks.

saw this today and thought it was mostly solid. it was hard to be too surprised by many of the developments, considering...the title, but the tension i think was mostly in how the islanders adapted to their new situation(s) and/or turned against the others. my guess for the ending through the movie was that a health insurance company was running the island, and they sent people with potentially deadly pre-existing conditions there to get rid of some of their most expensive customers. turned out to be a pharmaceutical company running accelerated drug trials, so i wasn't too far off...Toggle Spoiler

will vouch that the "joke" auspice mentions had a lot of people in the theater cracking up

I made the fatal mistake of thinking about the ending and M. Night earnestly believing two aging kids, another one who likes codes and an undercover cop (who openly tells people he's a cop?!) thwarting a big pharma experiment that appears to be successfully solving diseaseToggle Spoiler in one fell swoop is very funny.

the way it has the doctor be racist because he's crazy is terrible. racism is bad but unrelated to you. a malignancy, not a norm. not that i expect like,, good politics from a shyamalan movie. also the way they signal that the daughter had aged with an ass shot made me groan. some of it worked though, the conceit is affecting in a few sort of surprising ways, but also boring and kinda gross in others. i think building to the twist is fun but also once it comes im just waiting for it to endToggle Spoiler
