It’s so insane we live in a world with such unfathomable wealth, and these white collar criminals are rewarded with further wealth by breaking the law and this wealth generated illegally further insulates them from any repercussions. Then the poor who are most alienated from this system get jailed for breaking the laws just trying to survive sometimes, and then in prison they can be forced to work as slave labor for these robber baron enterprises, even furthering the riches of the wealthy. And the rhetoric around ethics in this country is so convoluted that conservatives who brand themselves as law and order candidates can’t even coherently put forward a case against political enemies but the ramshackle hog slop of accusations presented to the masses is actually more appealing and effective anyways. Like, while I am deeply saddened at the idea of ecological catastrophe destroying life as we know it on this planet, it sometimes seems like really this system could only play out that way.
