I mean rooting for a child to die seems bad but she committed the horrific crime of climate activism

I think part of what makes these people (JHB/Fox/spiked etc) so effective is that they can manage to be wrong in at least a couple different ways with every utterance. like obviously school is out now but also these are people who made a career talking about participation trophies ruining young people's ability to be as tough as their parents. it's impossible to engage with anything they say in a way that doesn't just boost their signal. I guess that's true of anyone on twitter but still these ones are the worst.

I think this is a good example, like first the argument against promoting fear via a video originally shared by Amy Mek, second the assertion that every generation is more prosperous than the previous is wrong but if it's true then what's wrong with immigration, the EU, etc, third it used to be child abuse to these people to make efforts to protect kids from harsh truths now it's child abuse to do the opposite. I don't know why I find it worth posting about except that it seems to me to reveal something about the effectiveness of reactionary political messaging, its capacity to make people defend things they don't really believe.

another thing I have been thinking about a lot given the Epstein stuff is the episode of the Reel politik podcast where they discuss how David Aaronovitch wrote his book about how conspiracy theories are all just wishful thinking by nutters during a period when he was employed at News Corp literally surrounded by people actively engaged in a conspiracy

I suspect after Swinson's performance today we are going to be hearing a lot more about institutional racism again at least for the next while

It's effective because reactionaries don't actually believe in anything.

I think if there is a core belief it is old people are better and braver than young people and the world was good until snowflake students ruined it which is why I find it disarming whenever e.g. Greta Thunberg is in the news and they pivot to how little there is to actually complain/protest about.

sure I don't think he'd dispute that. I know it is easy too to overestimate the importance twitter stuff but I sure do hope the scale of the collective meltdown among FBPE+ twitter has made some people reconsider some things.

Reminds me of the number of times people involved in the military have talked about staging a mutiny against Corbyn, going back to 2015: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/british-army-could-stage-mutiny-under-corbyn-says-senior-serving-general-10509742.html

wishing for an adult to step up and sort brexit is a big part of FBPE discourse and I hope at least a couple people, none of them will cover politics for a living but whatever, will remember that the adult choice thought it obviously correct to just ask the oldest guy in the room to take over without really asking what he would plan to do once he did

I'm moving to England with my French girlfriend in September on the assumption that she can apply for settled status until December 2020 (as the Home office website currently stipulates) and now having read that I'm fucking terrified. :ryan: :ryan:

Like this parentheses on the goverment website concerning this is completely new since last time I looked!!
If you do not have 5 years’ continuous residence when you apply, you’ll usually get pre-settled status. You must have started living in the UK by 31 December 2020 (or by the date the UK leaves the EU without a deal).
