Well, it's about the joker movie and they have nothing remotely interesting to say about it? It's not their fault, aside from having decided to do it. I don't think anyone could make a podcast that's listenable about it. The chapo one was terrible too

I gotcha. i haven't really kept up with the discourse surrounding this movie despite what was unavoidable so maybe that made it a more interesting discussion for me.

it's so weird for me personally to have the Bittersweet Motel guy in the middle of a Big Cultural Moment right now

i don't deny he has a prolific career geared for good podcast episodes, but looking at his filmography, what's fincher's blank check ? i

pretty sure Finchers blank check is in music videos and commercials that got him... Alien 3? i think it would be interesting for the #context for a discussion around how absolutely bananas music videos were in that era, and how this one group of commercial directors (gondry/spike jonze, etc) were becoming rockstars due to this weird mix of indie filmmaking and music video pop culture.

If it's a video, it's "Straight Up" or "Express Yourself" but it's not, it's Se7en, which collected $327 million on a $33 million budget.

there seems to be a fundamental misunderstanding of the blank check as a concept. seven, fight club and panic room all combine to GIVE fincher the blank check. the blank check movie is zodiac, a nearly 3-hour movie ostensibly about one of the world's most notorious serial killers but that is way more interested in a cartoonist's obsession than the actual crimes

The blank check vs. guarantor thing is tedious. And even if it wasn't, Fight Club wasn't much of a financial success, if at all. And even if those things weren't true, Zodiac's budget was dead average for 2007. And even if all that weren't true, the Hannibal Lecter and Saw franchises made financing any kind of movie you could plausibly market as being about serial killers a very safe bet circa 2005, 2006, or whenever Zodiac was greenlit.

the blank check thing is better stated as "commercially successful directors with a distinct personal style"

It’s just a dumb framework to talk about movies and crack dumb jokes.

Anyone worked up over the “blank check” aspect needs to relax.
