This is my favorite show in some time.

i think my hesitance to start watching this show was less that it was about rich people and more that it just seemed kinda maudlin. like downton abbey or something but modern and american. as soon as i watched the pilot i realized how funny it was

I guess it doesn't really have an easily explainable hook in the way a lot of popular prestige shows do

When I've attempted to explain that some of the characters are loosely based on real life members of the Murdoch, Mercer, and Koch families that seems to interest some people. Mostly older liberals like my in-laws.

I’ve been selling it as “corporate Game of Thrones with compelling characters”

its about how the superrich are bred and conditioned to be toxic monsters and arent "just like us" and what that means for the world.
and also its dynasty for uppermiddlebrow people
There’s no path to a satisfying conclusion at this point.

one friend didn't want to watch it because they thought it was just a dumb a&e show like billions, and why should we be watching a show about billionaires in this day and age.
one stopped watching because he couldn't take the "cringy" nature of it
my mother was the most baffling one. she said she stopped because she "didn't have anyone to root for", i reminded her that its from the guy who worked on in the thick of it, in the loop, and veep and she was like "i love those shows!" and i go "but there was no one to root for on those shows either" and she goes "well, those were comedies". i tried to convince her that in its own way, succession is just as funny as those shows you just need some time to adjust.

it kinda feels a little like a spiritual successor to mad men, gorgeous, meticulous with attention to detail, and pretty much every character is under enormous pressure and constantly miserable. also like mad men you had a cast with basically zero star power that, by season 2 has sent all these actors skyrocketing (def here for the alan ruck renaissance)

ok i only read the last two posts in fear of spoilers. finally dipped my toe in (i was like that first friend of tgk's that thought it would be like billions nonsense). just started season 1 tonight and now i'm obsessed

- i feel like i read some random tweet reference that the start of season 1 is rough so i'm excited to see the show get even better.

Before I started it, I assumed it was gonna be like Suits or Billions or something.... and only gave it a go because of the near universal praise I was seeing online. I was very pleasantly surprised.
The best thing I think I can do to get other people to watch it is mention that the creator was also responsible for Peep Show.

I really enjoy Billions but mostly because I love Paul Giamatti.
I've been thinking a lot lately that in a strange way this show reminds me of Barry Lyndon. Like the constant half assed happy accidents and inversely the shitty luck, the comedic tone, the weird tragedy and pacing as well as the inevitable miserableness of all the horrible rich people at the end doing anything to stay in control.

And yes oh my god, thankfully I've found a handful of dedicated superfans, but like I was getting legitimately angry at a friend who refused to be bothered with it for the whole season and I know they would love it and really wanted them to catch up so we could enjoy the finale together and its like oh my god you are missing the television event of the fucking decade.

it's funny that so many people here are saying this, because for once, this is the show that all my friends were watching and i was resistant to. (like say, game of thrones, which i still haven't watched.) now that i've started, i'm obsessed.
on the other hand, recommending peep show to (most) people is nearly impossible. everyone says it's too uncomfortable, but imo this show is just as cringe-y!

I don’t think Succession is that cringey of a show overall, but Jesus Christ, the L to the OG rap is certainly up there with Peep Show’s cringiest moments
