Baudelaire is my friend. That thing he wrote up about how the academie salon of whatever year sucked is great, plus I also have neuralgia and am a degenerate weirdo.

You can really see why French people are like that, from this.

In olden times in lieu of this you would have had to have a bunch of paintings of lobsters and rotting fruit and skulls, and those were way more expensive than a clock, probably. Especially if you wanted one that actually worked.

I have somewhere my dead grandfather's daybook from the year he became a doctor and it's some kind of weird "medical maladies of famous people" thing, one sick famous guy per week. There's a hilarious drawing of Baudelaire with his legs at a 90 degree angle from his body and holding his head. I am posting this so that when I look at my posts in 2027 I will see this one and find that book and scan it.

When the National Gallery up here bought that painting it almost destroyed what passes for society, up here.

A further controversy ensued in 1992 when it was discovered that the painting had been displayed upside-down following its acquisition.

modernism makes a lot more sense to me in the context of like the failed 1848 revolution and being bored and having to listen to people blather on and on about god and country in somebody’s like yellow wallpapered sitting room while somebody else smokes an enormous cigar

Modernism was the only thing that ever made sense to me. When they touched on it for like 40 seconds in high school art class I was like "I am finally home." And now it is the basis of my life.

They must have literally trained the gallery attendants how to talk to people about this thing because she had what was obviously a routine about how "If you look at the part where orange meets blue for a while, it looks like it's burning."

I'm not complaining, I'm endorsing this.

There is an episode of Arthur that follows a similar plotline.

It seems like the National Gallery made a good investment if they paid $3.2 million (in present day dollars) for a something that is apparently conservatively valued at $50 million:
