HELL YES BETHEL, guy and I founded a new religion that night... what a wonderful evening that was. all hail the cup..!

I’d save 10/26/89 for more advanced listening lessons, but hey, maybe you’ll love the midi flute!

I really like the random Brent versions before it was BACK back, aka 12/31/81 and 7/13/84 (same Greek show as Scarlet > Touch > Fire)

and I absolutely adore 12/31/90 (w/ Branford & Bruce Hornsby) & 3/29/90 (Branford)... wildly gorgeous sheets of sound

for the record: Dark Star debuted in 68 and was played regularly through the first hiatus in 74... afterwards it was gone throughout the groove years until 12/31/78 (great set & pro shot video) and was played a few times the next month on Keith’s last tour (love that Nassau version)... it was then gone from rotation until 1989, making just 2(?) appearances until 10/9/89, after which it was in a soft rotation until its last appearance in 94

here’s a nice 10 minute one! last one ever played, too... cool artifact for a number of reasons, mostly how fucking good everyone sounds so close to the end... Jerry’s got that Cripe guitar with the insane acoustic tone (yep, he’s not playing an acoustic here believe it or not), Vince is sticking hard to a B3 sound to start, and you can appreciate his contributions so much more... Bobby is big, bombastic, peak of his powers, karate chop rhythm guitar

it’s just a really great sound, but when Jerry starts to sing?? oh yea, that’s right, the wheels were real close to coming off... it’s no surprise that Jerry really wanted to just be playing acoustic music at this point, that Dead tour had become an enormous albatross, feeding none but the most vulnerable parts of him

for a more structured dark star i really like the 6/24/70 dark star -> attics -> dark star -> sugar mag -> dark star -> stephen sequence. the audience tape can take some getting used to but if you're in the right headspace w/ decent headphones it's truly magical.

I looooove that tape, it's definitely in my top 5 or 10 shows. I forget which song it is but at one point during that jam a guy right next to the taper goes "oh my godddd" in a mind-blown hippie spunion way and it's wonderful.

I know there's already been 1000 recs for you and gauchebag but I do think the DP 4 2/13/70 is a good one to gain appreciation for DS in classic form, especially since (as noted) we just hit the 50th anniversary. Only has one weird, drums/space-ish noodly jam right after the first verse while they try to figure out where to take it for 1-2 min, then explodes into a blissful peaky Feelin Groovy jam, continues to soar, and eventually meanders back to familiar DS territory before doing the 2nd verse>close. A rare 30 min Dead jam where it really feels like no time is wasted

i listened to 2/13/70 at work but as with anything i want to personally enjoy that i try to digest at work it leaves no impression

so i'm just starting up the dark star again and will listen to the next hour and a half of music and smoke a little bit and see if it gives me anything to say

Some of those early Dark Star > China Cat > The Eleven runs are great: 1/17/68 (first China Cat) and 3/16/68 come to mind. Another favorite is 10/12/68 Dark Star > St Stephen > Eleven > Death Don't Have No Mercy.

And one last one for good measure is 10/19/73 - Dick's Picks 19. Especially jazzy Dark Star that ends up in a lovely Morning Dew.

This is really nice and very “type I” (to use a phish land expression) which I’m into cause the Dark Star space is just gorgeous. It’s really just the noisy/dissonance filled versions that I run into problems with but maybe those aren’t even really that common?

There is a real mystical majesty to Dark Star that makes it the most Deady of Dead songs to me, even if I find it frequently impenetrable
