kylie (and madonna at her best) didn't need to telegraph love for the gay community, it's just a feeling, not a marketing strategy. god, i don't even know how taylor got to this. i thought she was supposed to be going back to country??? hyuck hyuck.

Is it? I say this as a gay.

Taylor got lots of shit for letting alt-right people co-opt her image/music w/ the last album cycle. Indeed she was being venerated as some sort of alt-right figurehead by actual alt-righters, and refused to do anything so simple as denounce Nazis w/ the last album campaign. The prevailing thought was that a big part of her revenue is from rural crowds who have overlap w/ alt-right groups and she didn't want to alienate them. So her making the (very easy) pivot to ALLY w/ this dumbass song seems like another cynical move.

These new songs are very bad but I'm sure she'll have a few keepers out of 18 songs, a'la Dress, Delicate, So It Goes, etc.

My favorite controversy from the reputation era was how folks initially thought the lyric from Dress was "carve your name into my nipples" (this was a thing on Popjustice)

i’m open to the argument that she’s laying it on a bit thick as a rebuke to the criticism from the left that you mention, and as a cishet male i’m probably not the best judge of this-but her outward support of lgbt rights seems genuine and coming from a sincere place to me

im sure she's been fine with queer ppl as much as the next upper middle class white girl who grew up on an xmas tree farm in PA., but it does feel like someone in her management gave her the OK to turn out the lowest common denominator GAY ANTHEMS (BOYS AND BOYS AND GIRLS AND GIRLS! WELCOME TO NEW YORK!). then again, she's really not making music for anyone who posts on this message board so i gotta imagine this song is so fucking radical for a young queer kid in oklahoma and is hearing their icon sing the word 'gay'
wimbledon, strawberries, bubbles, please protect me. happy midsumma, hope you spend it in your heart, everyone is there. bitch.

i think i'm burnt out on the (probably somewhat self-imposed) pressure to have my Taylor Takes in order.
really disliked "ME" for (as was written about) the way it seemed to signal the erasure of her writerly idiosyncrasies. this new one at least feels a bit more like the product of her sensibility, if only in the comparative density of the verse lyrics.

the thing about Tay doing synthpop, though, is like ... how could you outdo 1989 in that department if you were her? 1989, while not my favourite TS record - though i effusively thought it was at the time - so effectively married her maturing "voice" with the Antonoff pop facing production ethos. these two new songs feel so ... redundant and anonymous. it's interesting how they actually throw the reputation material into relief and reveal it to be better than was initially judged (imo, including by myself).

i really wish "new year's day" would've bridged into a new, more stripped down acoustic era, though. i think that would've been the true play.

instead we got What Trolls Hath Wrought lol

it most likely is but i hard to find what taylor's doing here - in general - totally puff, and not good puff. trying too hard. then again she's always spread messages of love and self acceptance so i'm not gonna be a dick about it and sure, could've thought through my response better. but she's no gaga.

The irony (or maybe just some dumb coincidence I’m stuck on) of her regression in lyrics is that she’s recently established a real solidity in her public presence, with well thought out statements and writings on various issues that feel like the opposite of simple celeb hashtag woke pandering, substantial, mature offerings most often joined by money or organisational efforts. Meanwhile she seems uninterested in being as mature in her music as her teenage self was on Fearless.

I subscribe to the idea that reputation’s flat reception caused a huge retreat musically coinciding with an emboldened sense of how she wants to use her platform resulting in a progressive leaning children’s record

she's a brand, she spent years making herself into a brand, and people see right through her now

she's flailing but maybe we'll get a good song or two out of it, would prefer if she just lied down in the bed she's made for herself
apologies

oh really i didn’t know that. and i agree that that collaboration produced some dece stuff btw. but in any event it sure seems like she internalized some of those pop factory songwriting principles (for the worse).

but i had the same exact thoughts of her capitalist composing (lol god i need a punch to the face) after the first few singles on reputation, and i ended up coming around on it for the most part, so we’ll see i guess
