No.

I got fired from a job in like 2011. It was at a call center so they fired me, escorted me outside and had a guard bring out my belongings which consisted of a Clif Bar I had a brought that day and a Fugazi button that I thought I'd lost.

I have a dancing cactus toy, a rubber bouncy ball and a ceramic teddy bear which a colleague gave me when she retired. I also have some takeaway menus pinned up.

My desk moves every 2-8 weeks so sometimes I put things out but sometimes I don't bother. The one thing I always hang on the wall above my weekly schedule is a postcard with this -

If my desk is big enough I'll have my mini snow globe from Dollywood out. Usually it's just computer, headset, flashlight, cup of pens, note pad, water bottle and hand lotion.

I have a stack of books, some gifts my niece made for me (like a rock painted to look like a penguin), and a framed newspaper from a russian opposition movement that had a hammer and sickle on it and headlines like “let’s frighten the government together!” It predicts Putin will be out of power by the summer of 2008

I've got a bulletin board with a metal gauge conversion chart, an obsolete company directory, an obsolete order status code list, an obsolete product code list, a handwritten inaccurate truck weight limit notification from when we had an entirely different fleet, and a map of Quebec with crudely delineated delivery zones, but I use all that stuff every day so I don't really consider it "decoration".

No.

At my current job i was originally laid off after like 5 months and then returned about 8 months later. The day i got back my workspace was empty save for a notebook i’d tossed haphazardly on my desk as i walked out on my previously last day.

Was a real “Don’t Forget, You’re Here Forever” kinda moment.

Also - very jealous of all you cubical people. I work in a “cool” open office and i just learned some dude who retired is coming back for some god damn reason and taking the empty desk next to me.

Why me?

No. I did have a novelty hollow plastic candy cane of various Smirnoff novelty flavor samplers that a former boss gave to me as a holiday gift one year though. That sat in my office for maybe 18 months before I finally brought it home, completely untouched.

It is now in Kermit's attic. Maybe in 20 years he'll drink it. It probably can't taste any worse for the wait.

A different former boss used to keep a bottle of cheap whisky in his bottom desk drawer, like in one of those '80s cop movies, and would routinely get hammered at work by 2 to 3 pm. On the rare occasions he showed up in court, he would generally be swaying visibly on his feet. I always half-expected him to pull a Freddy Rumsen but he never did.

I was his favorite employee because I never asked him any questions and just did my job on autopilot with minimal oversight necessary, thereby enabling him to maintain that routine. He retired pretty much immediately after I left that unit.

I'm a teacher so we'd be weird if we have a blank desk. I like having a lot of decor and my room looks pretty welcoming. I have a lot of social justice-y posters and stuff up.

Here's some pics:

The Angela Davis poster was a present from a Hpn Christmas exchange one year :)

We had a consultant in our office a long time ago and he told my boss to look around the office and make a list of the employees that decorate their workspaces and said that those are the employees that you should get rid of. I fucking hated that dude. Like, what a monster.

when I was a subtitute teacher I actually got some enjoyment seeing how each teacher personalized their rooms. Very wholesome vibes
