Are you calling all of Accelerate bad songs? I think there's a half dozen good or better songs on the record.

I've only really heard this album on in the background (my parents like to play it). Idk, nothing really stuck, but I guess I should give it a proper listen.

The version they eventually recorded is with slightly new lyrics, isn't it?

I think there wasn't much of a second half originally. A lot of ad-libbing in 85.

to be fair, i haven't spent much time with the last two records at all, but i really like living well is the best revenge even though i don't love any other tracks on em yet. i spent the whole summer listening to a ton of rem last year. i similarly find it difficult to consider their 80s/pre-document material at the same time as everything that came after, and then i find it harder still to compare the records after bill berry to the ones with him. so, i'm going to post my favorite songs from all their studio albums (+ chronic town) as i think i remember seeing other people do earlier in this thread!

wolves, lower
laughing
harborcoat
kohoutek
fall on me
it's the end of the world as we know it (and i feel fine)
world leader pretend
losing my religion
try not to breathe
i don't sleep, i dream
electrolite
at my most beautiful
imitation of life
leaving new york
living well is the best revenge
that someone is you

some obvious picks, but some of these songs (i.e. end of the world + losing my religion + imitation of life + maybe electrolite??) are hard to deny and are quite obviously Big For A Reason, if you will. for what it's worth, as far as songs that aren't singles from those albums i love, i'd say welcome to the occupation + texarkana + bittersweet me or new test leper because i think bittersweet me was a single but i'm not sure it got any radio play or anything. (i may be way wrong about this.) (and i'm excluding reveal because i have only heard it once.) i love this damn band. i remember one night before going to work in july or something just staying up and watching a bunch of live footage on youtube from the 80s and then going into work the next day with second guessing of all songs just rattling through my head all day. i particularly love this set even though it is infuriatingly cut super short? Thus concludes my R.E.M. post.

edit: i just noticed part of the set i linked in this post is in the op. You all know about this set. Oh god.

I hope accelerate gets an Anniversary Special Edition where they remix it without that awful Jack-knife Lee Production

like what Pearl Jam did with Ten

Yeah the production is brickwalled to death. The Accelerate songs are great on the Live in Dublin. That entire set is fantastic actually.

was digging through some of https://popsongs.wordpress.com/

Some of the "Ask Michael Stipe" sections are pretty interesting. Thought badhat would like this one:

Michael,

Are there any songs you wish you could go back and re-record in the studio after performing them live?

most of them, yes. Like 95% of them. So it goes

theres a really amazing and now consistent change to the live versions of "fall on me" that happened not long after LRP came out where for the ends of the second and third bridges he belts up an octave and its so obviously better than the album version.

its such a gloriously understated little return.

really made my week.

i always forget that river and michael were really close and he was pretty devastated by river's death, and I guess Rain's album (and this song) is a tribute to him on the 25th aniversary of his death, and includes some wongs he wrote.

"It’s so hard to believe [River Phoenix]’s been gone for 25 years. It really made me think about the construct of time, how we create it to make sense of things, and how especially with grief, it never really snaps to a grid. That said, a quarter of a century has a definite weight to it and I felt compelled and guided to share River the musician, with the world."
