you've whittled your point down from "superman is completely irrelevant" to "with minimal information, I personally don't enjoy Superman because he hasn't been in a good movie since 1980."

those movies that haven't been good since 1980 ARE the general populace's impression of superman.
what percentage of people that go see these movies read superman comics? uh huh.

yeah but a director or studio's interpretation of a character being bad doesn't mean the DNA of the character is bad. anyone in 2007 would have been saying exactly what you're saying about cap, thor, and iron-man. give a character to a good writer/director and they'll be good.

Listen I’ve been there. I felt that way about Superman for a long time. But in the right hands he can be incredibly endearing and compelling.
For me personally the first time I grew to appreciate what Superman can be as a character was when Bruce Timm did the “Superman: The Animated Series.” I recommend giving that a try and see how you feel about Supes afterward.

Everything Poptone is saying about Superman I would have said about Captain America before the movies. Cap was just a boring solider character who could only throw a shield and bark orders at the other Avengers. But yeah, MCU Cap is one of the best characters. And I think they could definitely pull something similar with Superman, where the only thing he wants to do is help you.
You should really read All-Star Superman. Morrisons take on Supe would translate well to movies.

I love Superman. He's my hero.
Cavill was too smarmy, even before the CG-ed out mustache.

I was gonna say Jon Hamm is the perfect Supes but then I googled him and saw that he commented he'd like to be Batman, which is kinda cool because he basically looks just like Bruce Wayne from TAS. But then I saw a pic of him with gray temples and thought oh man he'd be a great Reed Richards.

That was exactly the concept behind Singers Returns and honestly, if it wasnt for that superboy and maybe tighten up the script and luthers dumb plan, it wasnt bad. Like even no super-kid i would’ve probably been like “ok, luthers plan was dumb but i get it: 4 stars”
Brandon Routh was also the best Superman in terms of believing he was a legit sweet weirdo alien still trying to figure out where he fit in on the planet as an adopted son of the earth

superman returns felt so joyless to me, way too dark visually, and kate bosworth as lois lane and spacey as luthor were stinkers.

No though. I loved Cap before the movies BUT he has had some pretty stupid moments of course. But when well written, can be terrific. You probably need to read more than avengers to see it though. It's the fact that he's supposed to stand for an ideal that never really existed and he's an icon and he has to navigate everything with that weight on is shoulder and still try to not be a weapon of imperialist America. I love the scene in civil war when Castle just gratuitously killed two minor villains in front of Cap and Cap beats him up and asks him to fight back and he refuses. Or in Secret wars when Wolverine is being a dick to Parker and Cap tells him to shut up and sit down and he just obeys.
But yeah i agree that in good hands Superman is great too.

aside from featuring in terrible movies as superman-henry cavill is mostly fine and not the main problem, although kind of vacant and borderline dim seeming to me and the biggest issue is that he kind of lacks that inherent quality of kindness that i feel is essential to portraying superman (something that brandon routh, for all his limitations as an actor, had in spades).
this is just stating the obvious but they need to get some really smart people involved in this on all levels including the actors because it's going to take some serious brain power and strategic acumen, not to mention creative ablity, to crack this shit and even come close to being able to compete with the mcu after the utter tatters that snyder left this shit in. so far this universe has been lead by total dunces excepting patty jenkins.
