yup, that's what I'm looking for!

But I'll start with the Foner. This is a subject I plan to read a lot about so excited for more when I get there.

Just finished:

Don carpenter, hard rain falling

This was fantastic, blasted through a third of it the day I got it. Very readable and gripping crime novel. Minor gripes with some occasional :? writing of the only black character

Just started:

it helps to realize it's supposed to be funny, i think. like obviously it's a serious book in many ways but its overall tone is supposed to be unserious, wry, making fun of itself. i don't remember much of the middle of the book but if it helps i burst into tears when i finished it. the last like two pages are a perfect ending to a book like that

The middle gets pretty brutal. Definitely worth the battle.

i'm on a bit of a calvino kick so i'm gonna post each page out of this short story 'Moon and GNAC' which seems to be a parallel dimension successor to 'hedgehog in the fog' which i would not have found without theta's post in the wifi thread and each have cut me pretty deep

Galla as a psychopath was not how I read it, so that's an interesting way to look at it. She certainly checks the boxes for psychopathy .

Still reading
Sometimes her prose is really infuriating but other times it works and you can see what she is trying to do with the language
It kind of helps to read the lectures too cause it’s a little easier to follow and is nominally intended to convey information I guess

Somebody was reading this on the train and it looked interesting so I’m stealing it

I'm reading Neuromancer which I thought I'd read before but I dont' remember any of it. But at any rate I'm loving it.

I think I'm going through a mid-life crisis at 35 because I just read the Desiderata and wanted to cry

Pretty cool that Aristoxenus is the main authority for both the life of Pythagoras and ancient Greek music.

I did! It was really good - scratches my nerdy mythology-loving itch while also reinterpreting those myths in an enjoyably modern way.

I haven’t, but maybe ride the lispector connection out the other side and read “chronicle of the murdered house”
