Yeah I’m intrigued too.

Recently watched Ugetsu and I think, as of right now, Mizoguchi is my favorite of the like huge figures in classic Japanese cinema.

12 Angry Men - Hume Cronyn is not in this movie. I know it doesn't make sense. But I looked everywhere and he just isn't.

im sure it's been said before but the casting director for 12 angry men, whoever they were, did a better job than anyone has done before or since -- you know everything you need to know about every character without their even speaking and still nobody really feels one-dimensional

it might be the most miraculously un-dated movie too, you could show that shit to a 10 year old and they'd forget about the b&w within 15 minutes guaranteed

Yeah shit I can’t get any info on who’s credited with casting it. Maybe that wasn’t really a discrete role back then

Isle of the Dead (Robson, 1945)

A classic of the horror movie based on a painting genre, with all those scenes of people washing their hands that we love to watch. I liked it. KARLOFF. It's a slow and chatty movie about dread and it seems to be a story with no real moral, just observation.

it kindof felt like a cross between the rocco siffredi documentary i posted about watching in here and inland empire thematically. like if the rocco siffredi doc realized how fucking stupid the reality it was portraying was and then watching that reality crumble and reassemble itself non-linearly.

most of his films i've seen tend to focus on the extent to which humans are in control of their own actions using different and different lenses to view that question for and i thought the idea of a roman porno company that takes itself Very Seriously as a setting was really well suited for that. both this and why dont you play in hell used a meta lens to do that through and felt a lot more anarchic and less emotionally draining than his earliest films for better or worse

i loved the colors, obv.

i'll probably rewatch it again soon it was only 70 minutes long and it felt like 15.

i'm going to try and watch forest of love this weekend. have heard nothing but good things about it.

it (antiporno) sat well with me over time though I think my initial impulse was to be embarrassed that I did [like it]. your point as to its theme of controlling your own actions makes it seem like an even better companion to Tag than I initially realized (I was more thinking about how they address portrayal and exploitation of women in cinema in a very self-aware way)

Have either of you seen much pinku or roman porno films? Pretty curious how antiporno relates to those. Also a good reminder to watch antiporno!

i've seen a few but it's been many years at this point and i don't trust the critical lens i was coming from when i watched them at this point. i can spot the broad tropes of the genre but i don't think i can say anything more insightful than you would get from reading a wikipedia entry.

i remember most of them being pretty dull, have had an urge to revisit lately tho for a few reasons.

again, take it with a grain of salt, but if someone had a gun to my head and forced me to do a one liner lots of antiporno stylistically reminded me of the good 80s tim burton doing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woman_on_the_Night_Train

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flower_and_Snake would probably also be an interesting comparison point given that it was made at a similar point in nikkatsu's history. reading the background and "critical appraisal" sections over again seems like it's something antiporno is directly referencing in the text itself.

at the very least, i remember most of these films being more interesting stylistically than the "golden age of porn" 70s flicks i was digging into around the same time.

I have to space out Fassbinder films, I can't imagine watching a bunch all in a row.
