i don't really play and probably barely over 1500. i just like it as a spectator sport

that game seems hella odd to me but seems to continue to paint a picture that carlsen is always in the driving seat and caruana's always trying to hold a draw

have yall paid attention to alphazero?

this looks so interesting. alphazero learned chess entirely through self-reinforcement and neural networks, as opposed to engines' use of opening books and emphasis on material points. and it handedly trumped the engines in heads up games, and it plays like a fucking alien, even compared to engines. i saw it sacrifice 4 pawns (against an engine, which normally are able to hold most dangerous positions) for nearly nothing and somehow just win off basic positional advantage

it seems wrong to think of the positional advantages that alphazero gets itself into vs stockfish and other engines as basic, but yeah it’s a really cool project. the famous game is obviously this one where alphazero plays 19. Re1 over the obvious 19. Ng4

weirdly a lot of people on the chess subreddit get defensive about alphazero being better than stockfish and start bringing up endgame tablebases and computing hardware or whatever but im pretty sure there’s no question the way alphazero plays is better
